It's not too late to soak up the last of summer with a trip to Portugal

Porto in Portugal has been named as the best European destination to visit for a last-minute holiday this season.

Temperatures are ideal for wandering through the historical towns or visiting nearby beaches.

CEO of holiday rental platform Lake.com, David Ciccarelli, spoke to GB News about why this is the ideal place to visit in autumn.

He said: "Last year I visited Porto in October, which was just lovely. The old town area is great for walking, dinners under the bridge each night, and fairly easy access to the beach if you dare to brave the water. This makes for a memorable visit in a historically rich town."

Holidaymakers visiting in September can enjoy highs of 23°C, with October reaching 20°C. At the time of writing, Ryanair flights from London Stansted to Porto airport departing on October 15 cost just £15.

Porto is famous for its port wine, and holidaymakers can sample this for themselves on a wine tour in the scenic Douro Valley.

Or visit the medieval Ribeira district, where you can find cobbled streets adorned with quaint bars, restaurants and cafes.

Ciccarelli added: "We visited the Livraria Lello. The single most emblematic feature of Livraria Lello takes centre stage inside: the iconic staircase.

"Whoever walks through the room will see the staircase, which is a surprisingly attractive piece, due to the apparent lightness that conceals the audacity of its conception.

"You feel the desire to climb it and you feel the fear that your weight might bring it down."

This makes it the perfect place for a relaxing getaway, and the weather is typically more pleasant than in the UK. However, the expert advised bringing an umbrella - "this season, it rains quickly then clears up just as fast".

For another last-minute beach break, research found the top places to visit right now, with Nessebar in Bulgaria taking the top spot.

The holiday spot, often called the Pearl of the Black Sea, offers incredible value, with £1.60 pints and £70 return flights. This is according to easyJet's Cheap Beach Index.

You can treat yourself to an ice cream for £1.20, enjoy a family meal for £28, or splash out on a three-course dinner for two at just £22.

These rock-bottom prices helped Nessebar achieve an outstanding score of 94.1 out of 100 on the index. The top five were rounded off by Budva Riviera, Montenegro, Costa de Almería, Spain, Costa Dorada, Spain and Medulin, Croatia.
