Explore beautiful vineyards, historical towns and idyllic beaches

While the UK is starting to cool down, Britons can soak up the last of the summer sun with a trip to Europe.

Speaking exclusively to GB News, a travel expert shared three great options for an autumnal getaway.

Parts of Portugal, Italy and Montenegro were recommended, and travelling at this time of year can help you beat the crowds and save money.

Holidays digital director at Thomas Cook online travel agency, Nicholas Smith, said: "As the summer season winds down, holidaymakers are turning their attention to autumn escapes.

"Portugal is proving especially popular, with Thomas Cook's bookings up 66 per cent year-on-year. Travellers are flocking to its renowned wineries, with this time of year offering the perfect moment to experience the lively Douro Valley during grape harvest season."

Douro Valley, the wine region, is easily reachable from Porto. Experience Portuguese wines and enjoy temperatures of up to 23°C in September and October.

The old town in Porto has pretty streets to wander down and plenty of options for dinners or drinks. It also has a beautiful beach, although the water might be colder at this time of year.

If you fancy Italy, Tuscany is a great option - particularly for those hoping to sample some delicious wines.

Smith continued: "For an Italian twist, Tuscany offers something similar, with wine lovers able to take part in its traditional wine harvest."

Tuscany has incredible vineyards and even hotter temperatures - up to 27°C in September. Immerse yourself in historical towns and beautiful countryside, while trying the local wine, truffles or olives.

Finally, the travel expert shared that Montenegro is another option proving popular in the autumn months. He continued: "We’re seeing even stronger growth in Montenegro, where bookings have quintupled year-on-year.

"Its Adriatic coastline, chic beach clubs in Budva and Kotor, and vibrant café culture are proving a real draw for those seeking a stylish European break with plenty of late-season sun."

Montenegro has similar temperatures to Tuscany, which is ideal for exploring the mountains or lounging by the beach. The coastline has both sandy and pebble shores, and it is a great place to catch some sunshine.
