Interest in European city breaks is rising, with searches for “city break” up 38 per cent year-on-year in February as travellers look ahead to spring and summer getaways.
While classic hotspots continue to dominate social media feeds, new research suggests some of the best short-break experiences are coming from places that attract far less hype.
A study by Ripe Motorhome Insurance analysed more than 74,000 Tripadvisor reviews across 30 European cities, comparing pre-arrival expectations with how travellers actually felt after visiting. This helped to find destinations that quietly outperform expectations – and pinpoint those most likely to leave visitors underwhelmed.
Marseille came out on top as Europe’s biggest hidden gem, recording the lowest level of disappointment of any city analysed. Just 0.32 per cent of reviews referenced feeling underwhelmed, despite the French port city receiving less pre-trip hype than many popular destinations.

| GETTYBy contrast, Paris ranked as Europe’s most “overhyped” city break in the same study, with disappointment commonly linked to crowding, higher-than-expected costs and experiences that failed to match online depictions.

Travellers praised Marseille for its coastal setting, lively markets, strong food scene and relaxed pace, often describing it as more authentic and affordable than anticipated.
The city also stands out in price, with meals and drinks typically costing far less than in the French capital, while return flights from the UK can be found for as little as £40 to £60.
Kraków placed second, with visitors highlighting its well-preserved historic centre, walkable layout and excellent value for money. Helsinki ranked highly for its calm atmosphere, modern design and waterfront setting, while Porto impressed travellers with its riverside scenery, traditional architecture and good-value food and drink.
Warsaw also featured strongly, with many reviewers describing the Polish capital as greener, more vibrant and more affordable than expected.

| GETTYTravel expert at Ripe Motorhome Insurance, Mel Savage, said: “Modern travel expectations are now shaped by social media imagery and viral ‘must-see’ lists. Travellers arrive with a very specific picture in mind, but the destinations people enjoy most are often those that quietly surprise them.
“Marseille stands out because it combines coastal scenery, culture and good value without the heavy crowding or expense you find in other hotspots. For travellers planning a short European getaway, looking beyond the obvious choices can make a big difference to your overall experience.”
With short-haul flight prices staying competitive and travellers increasingly wary of overcrowded hotspots, the research suggests Europe’s quieter cities may offer better value – and better memories – for the next wave of city-break bookers.
