Cruises are a great way to "explore multiple destinations in comfort and style"

Cruises are a fantastic holiday option, and there really is something for everyone, whether you are looking for a specific theme or want to visit all of your bucket list destinations in one trip.

Speaking exclusively to GB News, a cruise expert shared tips to ensure you get the most out of your holiday.

The average cruise can last anywhere from a few days to a few weeks - or even longer - and cruise specialist and co-founder of DPP Travel, Mandy Pullin, explained they are particularly great for older travellers.

She told GB News: "Cruising can be one of the most rewarding ways to travel - especially for those over 50 who are looking to explore multiple destinations in comfort and style.

"But let’s be honest: not every cruise is created equal. The key to loving your cruise experience is starting with the right match. And that begins with the type of cruise you choose.

"From intimate river cruises through Europe to expedition ships in Antarctica or luxurious ocean liners with every onboard amenity imaginable - there’s a cruise style for nearly every traveller.

"Choosing the right cruise type is the first (and most important) decision that will shape the entire experience."

There are plenty of resources, like experts and reviews, available to help you make the right choice, and using these before booking an experience is crucial, according to Mandy.

She said: "If you're going the DIY route, I can’t stress this enough: do your research using trusted sources. Cruise line websites, professional reviews, and experienced travel advisors can offer much more reliable insights than your neighbourhood Facebook group.

"While personal opinions are valuable, they’re often based on very different expectations or experiences.

"As a cruise specialist, I guide my clients through this process based on their travel style, desired level of activity, interest in enrichment opportunities, and preferred level of luxury.

"For example, a culturally curious couple might love a small-ship river cruise through France, while a more adventurous traveller could thrive on an expedition cruise to the Galápagos."

Whether you are booking a cruise yourself or seeking expert guidance, Mandy suggested six key tips that will help make your trip better.

How to get the most out of your cruise

  • Book early for the best selection of cabins and itineraries.
  • Arrive at your embarkation city at least a day early. A missed connection can mean a missed cruise.
  • Pack smart. Think layers, comfortable shoes, and resort-casual attire unless your cruise specifically calls for formal wear.
  • Make onboard reservations early. Spa appointments, specialty dining, and excursions can fill up quickly.
  • Be open to new experiences. Whether it’s joining a cooking class or trying a new cuisine, some of the best cruise memories come from saying “yes”.
  • Cruising is not one-size-fits-all, but when it’s the right fit, it’s magic. Whether you’re planning your first cruise or your 15th, working with someone who knows the ins and outs can help.
