While winter holidays feel far away, a travel expert has shared that now is actually the best time to book for a great deal.
Securing your flights before the end of July could help you get a better deal on flights.
This comes from personal finance expert and CEO of Proxy Coupons, Fred Harrington, who analysed years of flight pricing data to pinpoint exactly when travellers should act.
He said: “Most people make the mistake of thinking they have plenty of time to book Christmas flights. However, there's a sweet spot in July where you can lock in prices before the inevitable surge begins.
Set up alerts to get the best flight deals
“What many people don't realise is that airlines start factoring in holiday demand much earlier than you'd expect. By late July, they're already adjusting prices upward in anticipation of the Christmas rush. The longer you wait, the more you'll pay.”
Booking at the start to the middle of July was shown to be the best time, but holidaymakers acting quickly can still benefit from cheaper deals.
The money-saving expert shared four more tips to ensure you get the most affordable flights and holidays you can, even if you're not ready to book right now.
Book mid-week departures and returns
Travelling midweek, where possible, can lead to lower costs, as demand will be lower. Think Tuesday and Wednesday departures.
Fred said: “If you can be flexible with your travel dates, avoiding Friday and Sunday departures can save you 20 to 30 per cent on average."
Set up price alerts immediately
The cost of flights goes up and down, so you've not necessarily missed the best deal if you've not booked already. Setting a price alert on travel websites such as Skyscanner will inform you when costs are lower than average.
Fred explained: “I recommend setting alerts for multiple date combinations around your preferred travel window. This way, you can spot price drops and act quickly.”
Leverage reward points strategically
Incentives and loyalty schemes can be boosted around Christmas, meaning you can often get more for your reward.
MONEY-SAVING TIPS

He continued: “Holiday flights have some of the highest cash prices of the year, which means your points go further in terms of value."
Consider alternative airports
Flight prices can vary between airports, so check if there is anywhere else you can depart to and from at a lower price point. Just remember to factor in the costs of travelling to the airport in your savings.
Fred continued: "Sometimes flying into a secondary airport and renting a car for a short drive saves more money than the convenience of a direct route to your primary destination."
