Whether you're looking for culture, history or coastlines, the UK has an affordable holiday option for you

Staycations often get a bad rep for their price, but there are plenty of interesting places to visit that don't break the bank.

Speaking exclusively to GB News, a travel expert named what they consider the three best options for a budget family holiday.

Blackpool, Liverpool and Portsmouth were named the best by travel and tourism expert and marketing director at BCN Travel, Christian Petzold.

And the traditional holiday destinations have more to offer than Britons may realise, according to the pro.

Blackpool was the best affordable destination overall

Blackpool, Lancashire

Blackpool has long been a top destination for holidaymakers seeking affordable seaside fun and entertainment. While it gets mixed reviews, Christian shared why it is worth adding to your holiday list.

He said: "Blackpool is the UK's number one choice for budget breaks. It's a family favourite as you can find B&Bs for £35 to £50 per night and enjoy the beach and promenade without spending a penny.

"The Pleasure Beach doesn't come free, but book ahead and tickets will cost you under £30. Couples can enjoy old-school glamour at the Tower Ballroom or evening shows that won't cost you London theatre land prices. The travel costs are also low. Trains and National Express usually cost less than £20."

Liverpool, Merseyside

Blackpool was closely followed by another northern holiday spot, as Liverpool was recommended for a UK trip. It is the perfect option if looking for a cheap city break.

Christian continued: "Liverpool offers culture, history, and good value for money. World Museum and Maritime Museum are both free to visit, and couples can stroll along the Albert Dock or go on a Beatles tour for around £15 a head.

"Decent hotels and Airbnbs are generally priced between £60 to £90 a night. Families will enjoy the interactive exhibits at the Museum of Liverpool and the Mersey ferry."

Portsmouth has a "mix of value and history"

Portsmouth, Hampshire

For a southern option, why not visit Portsmouth? The temperatures are generally warmer than in the north of England, and holidaymakers can save their cash by spending a day on the beach.

The expert said: "This seaside town is a mix of value and history. Hotel costs are in the region of £80 to £110 per night on average, and there are free or nominal-charge (£5 to £10) entry to the D-Day Story museum and Southsea Castle for families.

"The Historic Dockyard is more expensive, but tickets are valid for a whole year. Couples can enjoy romantic seaside walks or day trips to the Isle of Wight for under £20 return."
