Regions in England and Wales were found to be the most popular

Britons are looking to explore the UK this year. Some 63 per cent say they are planning a staycation, and 34 per cent will do this as their main holiday.

But where is the most popular place to visit? New research has unveiled where holidaymakers are flocking to in 2025.

Cumbria was voted the number one region, according to the Sykes Staycation Index report, followed by Cornwall and North Yorkshire.

The experts said: "Cumbria is a firm favourite for 2025 staycations, continuing its popularity from 2024 as the top region overall. It also boasts four of the UK’s top 10 destinations."

Cumbria is home to the Lake District, and holidaymakers are booking quickly to secure these destinations - six months before their trip, on average.

Experts at Visit Lake District discussed exactly what will draw you to the region. They stated: "Cumbria and the Lake District are often used interchangeably, such is the lure of the landscape of mountains and lakes that makes up one of England’s most beautiful regions.

"The Lake District is right in the mountainous heart of the county: England’s tallest peaks, biggest lakes and - to our mind, at least - most beautiful vistas are found here, within the protected confines of the Lake District National Park."

The Sykes Holiday Cottages research also found what influences the decision to book and why Britons might look locally for their getaway.

Travellers most want to go on a countryside walk, a coastal walk, or to explore local attractions during a UK break, which aligns with the most popular regions.

For more inspiration, experts revealed a quiet town in the UK is the best place for families to visit this summer.

Whitby in North Yorkshire took the crown, and the northern spot is renowned for its sandy beaches and child-friendly attractions. In second place was a Cumbrian holiday hotspot, Windermere.
