Discover quaint villages and beautiful countryside at two of the best walking destinations in the UK

Going for a long walk is a great way to unwind and take in the glorious British landscapes, and there are plenty of routes to pick from in the UK.

Speaking to GB News, a travel expert shared two go-to staycation spots worth visiting for a walking weekend.

Routes in the Lake District and the Cotswolds were named by travel expert and CEO of Road Smiles, Eamonn Turley.

He said: "One of my own favourite places to take a walk in the UK is the Cumbria Lake District, especially around Derwentwater and Catbells.

"The Catbells walk is not long, only about 3.5 miles, but it rewards you with vistas over the lake and surrounding mountains like Skiddaw."

The walk has picture-perfect views and takes around 1.5 hours to complete, making it perfect for a gentle stroll. Holidaymakers looking for something even more laidback can consider the Derwentwater lake path.

Turley continued: "For something a bit more relaxing, Derwentwater lake path is the place to go, with peaceful wooded sections and lots of spots to pull in for a picnic.

"I always end my walks with one stop at Keswick to follow that up with a nice warm tea room experience. It's the perfect way to round off a walk."

Travel experts at SimonEscapes seconded this recommendation. They said: "The Lake District is a hiker’s paradise, offering everything from gentle lakeside strolls to epic ridge walks."

For an option down south, consider the Cotswolds. This is an incredibly popular staycation spot thanks to its picturesque English villages and rolling hills - perfect for a scenic walk.

The travel pro continued: "Another to go to is the Cotswolds, where it's an easier walk but no less charming. The Cotswold Way, 102 miles of National Trail, has many shorter sections with which to have day walks."

The Cotswolds countryside is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, meaning there are some seriously impressive views to discover.

The expert continued: "One of my own favourite walks is from Bourton-on-the-Water to Stow-on-the-Wold, where you stroll along rolling fields, stone fences, and villages out of the postcard.

"It's ideal for the one who likes to balance an open-country walk with drop-ins at pubs or tea houses to have a warm lunch or a cup of cider."

Travel experts at SimonEscapes also praised the Cotswolds as a great active staycation option. They added: "Some of the most scenic coastal walks in the UK can be done along the South West coastal path. The South West Coast Path is the UK's longest national trail and stretches for a total of 630 miles."

While the route is very long, they suggested doing a shorter version of it, such as the walk between Minehead in Somerset to Poole Harbour in Dorset, following the coasts of North Devon, Cornwall, South Devon and Dorset.
