Europe has plenty of holiday spots you don't want to miss, but when you go is important. Travelling during the summer can be busier and more expensive.
Indeed, interest in waiting until autumn for a holiday has risen among over-60s. An expert suggested five countries and regions that make a perfect escape for older couples during this time.
This is according to James Rodgers, from Senior Lovers, who suggested Portugal, Italy, Spain, Cyprus and Greece are particularly well-suited for an autumn escape.
He said: "September and October truly offer the best value experience for senior couples. You get the benefit of still-warm temperatures but without the overwhelming crowds or price hikes of peak season.”

Portugal, particularly the Algarve, has become more popular with Britons looking for something beyond their usual Mediterranean favourites. In fact, the expert shared research showing that those who visited Portugal in autumn reported higher satisfaction rates than summer travellers.
Mr Rodgers explained: “The Portuguese coast provides that perfect mix of beautiful beaches that aren't packed, along with historic towns where you can actually move around without fighting against crowds.
“Many older couples particularly value being able to secure restaurant reservations without booking weeks in advance, and finding peaceful spots to enjoy sunset drinks together."
Lake Garda, Italy
Next is Italy, and Lake Garda is a great option as its microclimate keeps temperatures mild throughout the autumn months. Whether you want to sip on wine while enjoying the view or explore historical towns, there is something for you in this area.
He continued: “Lake Garda offers stunning views, boat trips that aren't overbooked, and wonderful lakeside restaurants where you can actually hear each other speak without shouting over tourist chatter."
Costa del Sol and Andalusia, Southern Spain
If the above doesn't take your fancy, Spain is always a winner. Consider places in Southern Spain for warm temperatures, great food and culture to explore. Rodgers added: "The cooler temperatures make exploring historic cities like Seville and Granada so much more pleasant for seniors.
“You can wander through the Alhambra without the exhausting summer heat, which makes a huge difference for older visitors. Plus, daily siestas provide the perfect excuse to rest, recharge and unwind at your own pace.”
Cyprus
Cyprus maintains a great climate beyond the main summer season. It is very popular with Britons and has a strong expat community.
Rodgers continued: "Cyprus is especially good for senior couples who may have some mobility issues, as many resorts cater very well to older visitors with accessible accommodation and facilities.

Crete and Rhodes, Greece
For another island escape, consider the Greek islands for a perfect getaway. The expert continued: “These islands stay warmer longer than the more northern parts of Europe, but what seniors really appreciate is how the authentic Greek experience becomes more accessible once the summer crowds leave.
“You can experience traditional tavernas, speak with locals, and discover the real culture in a way that just isn't possible in July or August.”
No matter where you pick, there are lots of perks to travelling in autumn - not least getting the last bit of sun as the weather starts to change in the UK.
Rodgers said: “Our members consistently tell us they've found better value, more attentive service, and a far more relaxed pace during these post-summer months. For many older couples, the ability to enjoy destinations without the noise and rush of peak season creates a much more conducive environment for romance and connection.”
