Benidorm might be famous for its neon-lit strip and cheap pints, but there is a whole other side to this Costa Blanca favourite that some British holidaymakers never discover.
Just a stone's throw from the usual tourist haunts lies a lesser-known Roman landscape stretching back more than two millennia.
Ancient military outposts perch on hillsides overlooking the bay, while remnants of roads once walked by legionaries still trace the coastline.
There is even a complete Roman city waiting to be explored nearby, which travel experts at First Choice called a surprising cultural treasure hiding in plain sight at one of Britain's most beloved party destinations.

For those looking to explore this ancient world, Tossal de La Cala is a great starting point. This free-to-visit military outpost dates back to around 77BC and sits on a hill with stunning views over the coastline near the strip, complete with signposted walking routes and information panels.
The ancient city of Lucentum is easily reachable from Benidorm, where visitors can wander preserved streets, explore Roman baths, and admire defensive walls for just €3 entry.
History buffs can also hunt down sections of the Via Augusta near Altea and Villajoyosa, one of Roman Spain's longest roads still visible along the coast. When it comes to value for money, Benidorm promises low prices.
TRAVEL INSPIRATION
A pint in the Spanish resort costs between €2.50 and €3, while you could be looking at €6 or more in the Italian capital, the experts stated.
Meals work out around 25 per cent cheaper too, making a three-course dinner for two considerably easier on the wallet.
The savings really add up when you factor in accommodation. A three-night break in Benidorm comes in at nearly £160 less per couple compared to Rome. The travel experts recommended the Cuco hotel as a convenient base within easy reach of both the beaches and nearby Roman sites.
And unlike Rome's famously crowded streets and lengthy queues, particularly during peak season, Benidorm offers a far more relaxed experience.

Managing director of First Choice, Kevin Nelson, said: "Most people think of Benidorm as a party destination. But just minutes from the beach, travellers can explore Roman roads, ancient forts, and villas that few ever see.
"You can experience history during the day and still enjoy the sunshine and coastline; it offers a completely different perspective on the destination."
For those wanting to combine ancient exploration with authentic Spanish flavours, the Old Town's tapas scene is a must. Locals love La Fava for its signature potato salad and oxtail croissant, while Bar Mal Pas specialises in seafood paellas.
The Cuco hotel offers a handy base with half-board from just £201 per person.
