The volume of VPN servers available is an easy way to compare subscriptions quickly, but doesn't tell you everything about a service

  • Surfshark has reached over 4,500 VPN servers worldwide
  • That's more than many of its closest VPN rivals
  • However, the team at Surfshark admit that doesn't tell the full story
  • Number of VPN servers doesn't tell you about speed or reliability
  • Surfshark has worked hard on other changes to ensure that

Already subscribed to Surfshark? You've unlocked a slew of new server locations at no extra cost.

The award-winner has announced that it's reached a new milestone, surpassing 4,500 servers worldwide. But before you get too excited about those numbers, Surfshark wants you to know something important.

"Server count is an easy and understandable metric for comparing VPN providers, but it doesn’t capture the full picture," said Justas Pukys, Senior Product Manager at Surfshark. "While providers strive for global coverage and access to essential locations, the true value comes from how consistently that reach translates into performance.

"A strong VPN delivers not just broad reach but reliable, high-performance servers, minimised latency, and uninterrupted connections across its network. In practice, this means robust uptime, proactive maintenance, and a smooth, user-friendly experience for all online activities, wherever you are in the world.”

Indeed, size alone won't actually tell you much about how well your VPN will perform compared to the some of the other best VPN deals around.

Granted, it doesn't tell the full story... but it's a significant milestone for Surfshark subscribers

The location of the server is what enables subscribers to manually spoof their IP address, making it appear as if they're situated in another country — unlocking streaming services that might be geo-restricted, or changing the library of content available in certain apps. However, a larger number of servers doesn't necessarily guarantee a faster or more reliable experience.

Surfshark is aware that its 4,500 server count dotted across the globe looks good on paper, but it wants to highlight some of the underlying technology designed to make your browsing faster and more stable.

The company says its latest expansion was designed with an eye on the future, Ensuring that the new servers coming online deliver the best speeds and reliability, even as more people join the network. Surfshark says its upgrade creates a VPN that works better in practice, not just on a spec sheet.

For comparison, NordVPN has over 7,000 servers in 126 countries around the world. Other brands are a little more coy about how many servers they have up-and-running across the globe. For example, ExpressVPN claims only to have servers in 24 separate locations across the United States and 105 countries worldwide, meanwhile, CyberGhost boasts about "a global fleet of fast servers in 100 countries" but there's no more detail than that.

Behind the scenes, subscribers will benefit from more choice of servers, as well as something called Everlink, which is actually a patented technology that keeps your connection from dropping when you need it most.

Then there's FastTrack, which sorts out the best route for your internet traffic so everything loads faster. Both of these run on Nexus SDN, which is Surfshark's own network infrastructure that's shaking up how consumer VPNs actually operate.

Nexus connects users to a network of servers, offering improved privacy, IP address rotation, and enhanced connection stability and speed. This addresses common VPN issues like static IP addresses, performance limitations, and vulnerability to server outages.

Surfshark users will benefit from the increased number of VPN servers as well as existing technologies, like its clever Nexus SDN
