You can now take back control of your Pinterest feed

  • Pinterest rolls out new feature to block AI-generated content
  • This is in response to mounting user feedback frustrated with AI content on their feeds
  • According to the platform, 57% of the content you see online is generated by AI
  • You can now tailor your feed in a new settings tab on Pinterest

If you've been feeling overwhelmed by artificial images flooding your Pinterest feed for months, you're not alone.

Pinterest, a visual discovery platform where users find and save ideas, has been inundated with AI-generated content, leaving many frustrated. Longtime users who once turned to the platform for authentic inspiration and real-world ideas now find themselves sifting through a growing flood of computer-generated imagery.

One frustrated user wrote on Reddit earlier this year, saying, "Am I the only one that hates seeing AI-generated images in Pinterest? I use Pinterest for real-life inspiration, art and ideas. From REAL people. I probably get more angry than necessary but it feels like it completely ruins the purpose of Pinterest and takes away the raw, humane creativity I search for."

Another Reddit user wrote, "I find that every image is A.I generated and the app has become useless for reference. If you want to find inspiration for say a wood working project you see something cool made my a real person for a reference or inspiration you end up getting images that are not made by a person but just a Image generator."

According to Pinterest, more than half of all online material is now created using generative AI - that's 57% of everything you see on the internet. To remedy this, Pinterest has rolled out new controls that let users dial down the amount of AI-generated content they see.

The new feature puts you back in control of your feed. You can now adjust the amount of AI content that appears in your feed, choosing to switch it on or off for specific categories.

It's a significant shift for the visual discovery platform, after facing mounting criticism about artificial imagery making it harder to find genuine, human-created pins.

So how does this new feature actually work?

You'll find it in your settings menu under "refine your recommendations," where there's now a "GenAI interests" tab.

From there, you can toggle AI content on or off for specific categories that tend to attract computer-generated imagery. These include beauty, art, fashion and home décor, with Pinterest promising to add more categories based on user feedback.

The controls are already live for Android and desktop users. If you're on an iPhone, you'll need to wait a bit longer - the feature is rolling out to iOS devices over the coming weeks.

Pinterest notes these controls only work on "eligible image Pins," so while you won't get a completely AI-free experience, the new feature aims to vastly reduce how much is seen based on your preferences.
