Apple could introduce a new Green or Purple shade

  • iPhone 17 could be released on September 19
  • It'll look similar to the iPhone 16 lineup, with two cameras on the back
  • Apple will use aluminium for the case design, but introduce new colours
  • The selfie camera could have twice as many pixels for crisp photos
  • Apple is widely tipped to keep the UK price identical to last year

If you're thinking about upgrading to a brand-new iPhone in the coming weeks, we've gathered all of the rumours about the upcoming iPhone 17, including release date, new colours, design, UK price, and features.

The new handset will supersede the iPhone 16, which launched in September last year. According to rumours, iPhone 17 owners can expect vastly upgraded selfie camera, new purple or green case colours, and battery life gains due to the more efficient A19 system-on-a-chip inside.

Scroll down for everything you need to know about the iPhone 17 ahead of its launch, which arrive as soon as September 19, based on reliable tipster Mark Gurman.

Writing for Bloomberg, the leakster stated: "The company usually unveils its new iPhones the week after Labour Day. If that holds, and there’s no reason to believe it won’t, you can pencil in the keynote for the week of Sept. 8."

Apple typically favours Tuesdays for its splashy product launches, although it has been known to make announcements on a Monday or Wednesday. However, Apple rarely makes any product launch announcements later in the week.

If the Californian company decides to hold its annual iPhone event on September 8, preorders will follow on Friday September 12, with the worldwide release date scheduled for September 19, 2025.

iPhone 17 UK price

With rumours that Apple plans to shake up its lineup — replacing the iPhone 16 Plus with a new ultra-sleek iPhone 17 Air — it's unclear what'll happen to pricing. Sources speaking to The Wall Street Journal claim Apple is plotting a price hike across its iPhone lineup in the coming months. The US company purportedly plans to attribute the higher price tags to new features and design changes, rather than tariffs imposed by the White House.

However, the oft-reliable Mark Gurman predicted that the iPhone 17 Air would launch with the same £899 price tag as the iPhone 16 Plus, which could contradict earlier whispers of a price rise.

If Apple decided against increasing prices across the lineup, we'd expect iPhone 17 to cost £799. It would supersede the iPhone 16, with the latter dropping £100 to fill the slot currently occupied by the older iPhone 15.

Here's the current lineup in the Apple Store.

ModelStarting Price (GBP)
iPhone 16 Pro Max£1,199
iPhone 16 Pro£999
iPhone 16 Plus£899
iPhone 16£799
iPhone 15£699

Apple has reshuffled the two camera lenses on the back of its iPhone 16, so they're stacked vertically for the first time since 2020. When held in landscape, it means the two cameras can capture footage for each eye to enable Spatial Video on Apple Vision Pro. This design is expected to remain in place for the iPhone 17 too

iPhone 17 design

iPhone 17 is widely expected to be made from aluminium, like the iPhone 16, iPhone 15, and earlier.

It's a good material as it allows heat built-up by the powerful processor inside the handset to dissipate, is relatively light in the hand, and recycled aluminium has a 95% lower carbon footprint than primary production.

As well as being built from the same material, from the outside, iPhone 17 is expected to look similar to its predecessor. According to some tipsters, the biggest visible change will see Apple morph the volume buttons into a single button for a more minimalistic appearance.

Apple is also looking to introduce a new shade of purple or green to the lineup. One of these is likely to be cut, with designers currently deciding between the two. Whispers suggest purple is the most popular choice of the two.

All possible colours for iPhone 17 include:

  • Black
  • Grey
  • Silver/White
  • Light Blue
  • Light Green
  • Light Purple

We're only aware of these incoming colours because of leaked camera arrays from each of the new models. The metal lens protector is colour-matched to the body of the iPhone, so leaksters have drawn conclusions from these components.

When it comes to the camera inside this new housing, multiple sources claim the new iPhone 17 models will arrive with a 24MP front-facing lens, twice the number of pixels found on the iPhone 16 models.

This is expected to produce clearer photos and videos. It also means you'll be able to crop into the image while still keeping a detailed image. Camera placement is expected to remain the same as the iPhone 16 lineup.

On the back, iPhone 17 looks set to keep the same dual-camera system as its predecessor — missing out on the third camera, a telephoto lens for lossless zoom, found on the pricier Pro models.

Battery life could be boosted on the new iPhone 17 lineup. While the size of the lithium-ion cell is tipped to be the same, it could last longer thanks to the efficiency of the newer A19 chipset.

The new models will don iOS 26 and it'll bring a brand-new design called Liquid Glass, which touches every corner of the operating system, real-time translation in FaceTime calls, a redesign to the Phone app, new Genmoji features, and much more.

For those who can download iOS 26, there’s plenty to look forward to. Apple is calling this release its 'broadest design update ever'. Although, Apple officially confirmed that three iPhones will miss out on iOS 26, raising questions for users about whether their devices will support the latest upgrade.
