Google Chrome is getting a major refresh with new AI features, and users are not happy with it.
The team at Google announced they are building an "AI-centric browser" which is designed to help you get your tasks done faster, easier, and safer — and they're planning on achieving this with three new features.
This announcement may come as a way to compete with other AI models like ChatGPT, which has also recently rolled out new features to help streamline your searches and tasks. For instance, ChatGPT can now take control of your Google Chrome to book restaurants, buy products, plan meals, and more.
Anthropic, another AI company, introduced Computer Use, which allows the AI agent Claude to browse sites and complete tasks for you.
Now, Chrome will be able to perform similar tasks with its assistant, Google Gemini.
If you're not familiar with Gemini, this is Google’s next-generation AI model. It can handle creating text, images, code, and more, with advanced reasoning and problem-solving capabilities. Gemini already works with several Google products like Gmail, Google Home, and more.
Whether it's work, school, or a personal project, Gemini will act as your assistant to help answer your questions and find sources for you from places like YouTube videos. In the future, there are also plans to help you find sites you've visited in the past so you can carry on from where you left off.

Chrome's AI system can also work with other popular systems like Google Docs and Calendar. While this isn't available on iOS or Android yet, it will be soon. Google is also planning to have Gemini perform multiple tasks in Chrome at once to help your tasks get done even faster. For instance, it will be able to order your groceries for you so you won't have to carve time out of your day to do it yourself.
Google is also designing a Chrome address bar, called Omnibox, to help you answer more complex or multi-part questions in a lengthy search. For instance, you can ask for product information and additional details when shopping for the best mattress toppers or best robot vacuum cleaners.
You can also ask follow-up questions to the answers provided and get relevant resource links provided to you. This will help you take your research from start to finish.

In terms of safety, Google is also improving on ways to keep you protected from cyber threats. Google hasn't had the luckiest summer when it comes to fraud attempts. A couple of weeks ago, Google confirmed one of the biggest data breaches for Gmail users. The tech giant also issued a "critical" update to fix an Android flaw that lets hackers take control of your phone.
AI is now being used to fill in your login credentials and actively block scam notifications and scam attempts. Google is also using AI-powered warnings to alert you of possible fraud attempts, and it seems to be keeping more users safe.
In a statement from Google, they said, "Chrome users on Android now receive about 3 billion fewer scammy and spammy website notifications a day."
