ChatGPT is down, preventing the AI chatbot from generating responses for thousands of disgruntled users.
Parent company OpenAI has admitted that some ChatGPT users will not see responses generated by the AI tool this morning and has promised that it's "investigating the root cause". The outage has already lasted an hour.
DownDetector, an independent website that monitors the performance of online services and apps based on chatter across social media, tracked a dramatic spike in reports in the UK earlier today (September 3). Over 1,000 people nationwide are experiencing problems with the OpenAI-owned service every minute.
Around half the number of reports are also being tracked in the US, according to DownDetector. It's possible the ChatGPT outage is linked to a specific issue in the UK and mainland Europe, or it could be due to the smaller number of people awake in the US at the moment.

OpenAI is headquartered in San Francisco, California. The AI startup has not commented on the problems with ChatGPT on its social media accounts. However, its server status tool has flagged potential problems.
"We’re currently experiencing issues," the dashboard states. It states that ChatGPT is the only OpenAI service currently experiencing problems.
The ongoing outage is labelled as "ChatGPT Not Displaying Responses".
"We are investigating the issue for the listed services," OpenAI has promised.

For those who don't know, ChatGPT is a conversational Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool that uses natural language processing to generate human-like prose, rewrite existing text, answer questions, and generate tables, graphs, and forms of content.
The “GPT” in its name stands for “Generative Pre-trained Transformer,” which means that it has been trained on a vast amount of text from across the internet to “generate” new responses based on the information it has learned.
ChatGPT can perform a wide range of tasks, including writing essays and code, summarising information, assisting with translations, and holding lifelike conversations with users through text, audio, and image inputs.
It's free to use, but OpenAI reserves some features for its paid plans.
