Italian authorities have successfully thwarted a wave of cyberattacks originating from Russia targeting digital infrastructure connected to the 2026 Winter Olympics, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani confirmed.
The attempted breaches targeted websites associated with the Games, accommodation providers in the alpine resort of Cortina d'Ampezzo, and Italian diplomatic premises abroad, including the country's embassy in Washington.
Cortina d'Ampezzo is one of five venue clusters for the Milan-Cortina Olympics, hosting competitions in alpine skiing, biathlon, curling, and sliding sports throughout the Games.
A foreign ministry spokesman subsequently confirmed Tajani's remarks about the attacks.

Competition at the Winter Olympics commenced on Wednesday with the opening curling matches taking place in Cortina, ahead of the formal opening ceremony scheduled for Friday.

A force of 6,000 security personnel has been stationed across Olympic venues, which extend from Milan to the Dolomites.
