Novak Djokovic faces Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals of the competition today

Roger Federer has faced a backlash online after admitting he feels Novak Djokovic will beat Jannik Sinner in today's semi-final clash at Wimbledon.

Djokovic goes into the showdown hoping to get revenge on his opponent, who dumped him out of the French Open at the same stage earlier this summer.

The 38-year-old is also hoping to continue his run of reaching the Wimbledon final, having done so every year since 2017.

Ahead of the match, a tennis fan in his car encountered Federer while the Swiss maestro was with his wife, Mirka.

He asked Federer who would win today's match and the 43-year-old, after some hesitation, then replied by saying: "I think Novak."

The way he answered the question has made some supporters unhappy, however. One X user said: "Like he doesn't know who's playing in semifinals at Wimbledon...the arrogancy is incredible."

A second said: "It took him a while to answer that."

Another wrote: "He didn't wanna answer at all but then couldn't pretend he didn't hear."

And a fourth ruthlessly stated: "Venomous snake."

Federer has won more Wimbledon titles than any other player in history with eight.

Should Djokovic win the competition this year, however, he'll join the Swiss legend on that tally.

Federer and Djokovic played against each other in three Wimbledon finals over the years.

Their first showdown came in 2014, with Djokovic winning 6–7(7–9), 6–4, 7–6(7–4), 5–7, 6–4.

It was the same outcome 12 months later, with Djokovic reigning supreme with a 7–6(7–1), 6–7(10–12), 6–4, 6–3 victyory at Centre Court.

The last time the two men played in the final of Wimbledon was 2019, before the coronavirus pandemic.

Djokovic won a thrilling showdown in the capital 7–6(7–5), 1–6, 7–6(7–4), 4–6, 13–12(7–3) to secure the fifth Wimbledon crown of his career.

Meanwhile, speaking ahead of his clash with Sinner, Djokovic admitted he'd need to be at the peak of his powers to beat his 23-year-old opponent.

"It's going to take the best of me at the moment to beat Jannik, I know that," he said.

"That's the only thing I'm thinking about right now, just getting myself physically and mentally in the right state so I can fight with him for as long as it's necessary."

On his previous victory over Flavio Cobolli, he added: "I think I played a solid match.
