A warm embrace between the pair followed the five-set conclusion, as Fonseca sat in his chair to take in what he had just done.

Djokovic joins Jannik Sinner as one of the big names in the competition to be eliminated after the Italian went out yesterday.

The Serbian stormed to a 5-1 lead in the first set, taking control of the contest and establishing his dominance.

Fonseca showed no sign of backing down, getting himself back to 5-4, but lost out in game 10 as Djokovic won the first set.

The Brazilian kept his composure in set four, after the pair broke each other multiple times, eventually serving out the fourth to win 7-5.

Fonseca came back from 3-1 down in set five to produce numerous aces and win with one, claiming the victory.

Djokovic was one of the favourites to win the competition, even before Alcaraz did not enter, and Sinner went out.

The competition is completely wide open, with Alexander Zverev the favourite to win the title.

Speaking after the game, Fonseca said: "I actually didn't believe I could win the match, I just played and enjoyed being in the court.

"What an idol we have, and what a pleasure it was to step on the court against him, so I thank him, I am very happy.

"I was just trying to hit the ball as fast as I could, I mean, Djokovic doesn't miss, and we still think he's 20.

"At the end of the match, he was more fit than me, which is crazy, and when the day was getting darker, I felt much slower.

"In the beginning, I was struggling with the heat and not feeling good.

"I just believed I could do aces, it was crazy. I have never done that before. I am super happy that I could finish like this."

Djokovic showed his class at the end of the contest, taking a moment to congratulate the Brazilian on his achievement, as he exited the tournament in the third round.
