Emma Raducanu is back in action this week at Indian Wells and faces Rebeka Masarova in the first round.

Emma Raducanu does not agree with former British No 1s Tim Henman and Joe Durie that she "needs matches".

Raducanu is back in action this week at Indian Wells as she continues her road to recovery after eight months off in 2023.

The 2021 US Open champion has dropped down to 250th in the world rankings and has been reliant on wildcard invites for tournaments so far this year.

She used her 'special ranking' to qualify for the main draw of the Australian Open, where she made it through to the second round.

Since making her return to competitive tennis, Raducanu has played seven matches across four different tournaments.

Henman suggested Raducanu would need to drop down to the Challenger events to revive her career while Durie recently advised the 21-year-old to play as many matches as possible.

But Raducanu is keen on following her own path and doesn't feel playing lots of matches will benefit her in the long run.

"I want to work on becoming a better tennis player," Raducanu told the BBC.

"I think for me I'm not too concerned about this year's tournaments.

"A lot of people out there would say that I need matches, but I think that for me I want to work on my game and development.

"Taking time to do that is very necessary and not just following the crowd, or playing a lot of matches, or dropping down [to Challenger level] to do that. I want to work on developing skills."

Raducanu has made herself available for Great Britain's Billie Jean King Cup qualifying tie in France next month.

It comes just a year after the young British star left Great Britain captain Anne Keothavong unimpressed over her absence from last year's event.

Raducanu is committed to playing the Stuttgart Open on clay throughout her sponsorship with Porsche.

She felt at the time that a quick change from indoor hard court to clay was going to be problematic given her injury record.

But that won't be such an issue this time around with the Billie Jean King Cup qualifying tie against France also being played on an indoor clay court this time.

"I don't know if I'll get the call-up," she said.

"But if she asks me to, I think it makes sense because it's before [the WTA tournament in] Stuttgart [which is also] on indoor clay."
