The British No 1 has had her say on equal pay

Emma Raducanu could face criticism following remarks about equal pay in tennis, where the British star revealed she would not take a position on the issue and doesn't compete for financial reasons.

The former US Open champion's comments emerged from a recent interview where she was questioned about her silence on WTA players earning less than their male counterparts.

The 22-year-old's stance may prove controversial given the ongoing debate about pay equality in professional tennis, with many prominent players actively campaigning for equal prize money across the sport.

Raducanu's position became clear when she stated: "I just prefer to kind of not get and involved and just whatever.

"Whatever the situation is, I'll kind of roll with it. But I'm never really going to take a stand either way."

The British No.1 further explained her detachment from the issue, saying: "I don't really get involved or stay in the loop with all the boards and all the decisions and stuff. I kind of just get on with it and I don't feel like I really am playing for money."

These comments mark a departure from many of her contemporaries who have been vocal advocates for equal prize money in tennis tournaments.

Raducanu's career has experienced significant fluctuations since her remarkable breakthrough at Flushing Meadows in 2021. The British player stunned the tennis world by capturing her first Grand Slam title as a qualifier at the US Open that year.

The 22-year-old has struggled to maintain consistent form on the WTA tour, experiencing a notable decline in her rankings. Multiple injury problems have disrupted her progress, preventing her from building momentum and achieving the stability many expected after her Grand Slam success.
