Carlos Alcaraz bagged himself an impressive amount in prize money after winning the French Open

Tennis star Carlos Alcaraz has added £2.1m to his fortune after winning the French Open, but the 22-year-old Spaniard shows little interest in extravagant purchases.

The young champion, who boasts a net worth of £29.5m according to Celebrity Net Worth, maintains a remarkably modest approach to spending his earnings.

"Maybe not after every big win, but for example at the Grand Slams, if I reach the semi-finals, I like to buy myself a new pair of sneakers," Alcaraz told the Tennis Channel before his Paris triumph.

"If I feel like I had a good season, at the end of the year I'll buy myself a nice watch."

The Spaniard's latest Grand Slam victory came after an extraordinary five hours and 29 minutes at Roland Garros, where he defeated world number one Jannik Sinner 4-6 6-7 (4) 6-4 7-6 (3) 7-6 (10-2).

Alcaraz mounted a stunning comeback from two sets down to claim his fifth major title, preventing the 23-year-old Italian from securing a third consecutive Grand Slam triumph.

The marathon encounter has been described as a historic French Open final, yet the double Wimbledon champion's reaction to such monumental victories remains characteristically understated.

His preference for trainers and timepieces over more ostentatious purchases reflects his grounded approach to wealth.

Alcaraz has accumulated £30m in career prize money from singles and doubles competitions, with £2.8m earned this season before Roland Garros.

Forbes reported he earned £23.6m in the year ending August 2024, making him the highest-earning tennis player of 2024.

Exhibition matches reportedly pay him up to £1.4m per appearance, whilst brand partnerships with Louis Vuitton, Rolex, Calvin Klein and BMW generated approximately £13m in 2023.

Last year, he signed a £160m contract with Nike extending until the mid-2030s, cementing his position as one of tennis's most marketable athletes despite his modest personal spending habits.

Perhaps most revealing of Alcaraz's modest lifestyle is his choice of accommodation, residing in a 90-square-metre bungalow at his coach Juan Carlos Ferrero's high-performance academy in Villena, Alicante.

The property, described as merely half the size of a tennis court, serves as his base for off-season training rather than a luxury home his wealth could easily afford.

Meanwhile, the young champion faces a significant financial hit due to French taxation laws.

Reports suggest that approximately 30 per cent of his winnings could be claimed by the French tax authorities, potentially costing Alcaraz around £639,000 of his hard-earned prize money.

The taxation system for professional tennis players operates differently from many other sports.

According to My Tennis HQ: "The amount of tax money a tennis player will pay on prize money will depend exclusively on the location where the money was earned, made, or received."
