The Briton is through to the fourth round of the competition

Cam Norrie has revealed he'd only practised once at the John Cain Arena prior to his victory over Casper Ruud at the Australian Open.

The Briton had gone into the match as the underdog, with his opponent seeded 11th.


But Norrie produced one of the best performances of his career to keep his dreams of glory alive.

The 28-year-old won 6-4, 6-7, 6-4, 6-3 to make the fourth round - with the tennis star poised to face Alexander Zverev or Alex Michelsen next.

ā€‹And Norrie, speaking after his triumph, said he'd practised on the John Cain Arena once prior to his win.

"Yeah, honestly so special especially on this court," he said.

"I think I only practised once on this court and didn't realise it was going to be this atmosphere, you guys got behind me from the beginning. So good.

"I had to play really brave and almost won that second set, Casper played well and fought hard.

"I didn't really let it bother me and it was a good mental performance to come out with a lot of energy in the third set.

"I kept at a really level throughout the match.

"I really enjoyed it. I stuck to my game plan throughout the match and got through."

He continued: "I've been working really hard in the off-season and trying to be a little bit more aggressive.

"I managed to really free up in the match today and really let go of it.

"I was coming forward a lot, and I bodied really well it really got me through it.

"I managed to win a lot of points at the net, served really well, honestly I was enjoying myself out there and was playing really free.

"I loved it."

Ruud was cheered by the Australian Open fans during the fixture, though it wasn't enough to boost the Norwegian's chances of going through.

And Norrie had no problem with the crowd cheering for his opponent, admitting he was given a few nicknames of his own.

"There was all sort of nicknames for me out there," he admitted.

"There was Nosdog over there [points] and all things like that.

"It was good stuff and I hope everyone was enjoying themselves.

"You could tell you guys had a few drinks and it was a really good atmosphere."

On the fourth round. and whether he'll tune in to watch Zverev's match with Michelsen, he said: "I'll watch it, I've been watching all the matches.

"I'll watch that one, enjoy today, get out and practice tomorrow and work on my game.
