The American was thumped on Saturday

Amanda Anisimova broke down in tears on Saturday after being thumped by Iga Swiatek in the final of Wimbledon.

The American had gone into the showdown hoping to claim the first major of her career, having beaten Aryna Sabalenka in the semi-finals.


However, Anisimova was comprehensively outplayed with Swiatek winning 6-0, 6-0 to etch her name into the history books.

Speaking after the contest on court, Anisimova broke down in tears as she addressed the crowd.

After regaining her composure, the 13th seed for the tournament addressed Swiatek and said: "You're such an incredible player, it showed today, you've been such an inspiration to me, an unbelievable athlete.

"You've had an incredible two weeks, getting to your first final here and winning, it's so special so congratulations to you and your team.

"Thank you to everybody who has supported me, it's been an incredible atmosphere, you guys have carried me through this championship.

"Even though I ran out of gas a bit today and wish I could put on a better performance, you guys have lifted me up today."

Anisimova also thanked her family in her box.

"To my pretty small box over there; you guys have been there for me," she continued.

"Some of my family have flown in, it's been unbelievable to experience this with you all.

"I wouldn't be standing here if you guys didn't fly in and support me throughout the tournament. You guys were that extra inspiration and motivation. You've always believed in me.

"My mum who flew in this morning I would definitely not be standing here without [her]. My mum's put in more work than I have honestly.

"Guys I'm so sorry, a few more words. My mum is the most selfless person I know. She's done everything to get me to this point in my life.

"Thank you for being here and breaking the superstition of flying in - it's definitely not why I lost today.

"I'm so happy that I get to share this moment and for you to be here and to witness this in person. You don't get to witness me live much anymore because you do so much for me and my sister but I love you so much.

"You've taken care of me. I don't have the words. I'm so so thankful. I just love you guys."

Swiatek, meanwhile, showed class by sending a message of support to her defeated rival.

"It seems super surreal. I want to congratulate Amanda for an amazing two weeks, no matter what happened today you should be proud and I hope we'll play many more finals," she said.

"I feel like I'm an experienced player after winning Slams before but I never expected this one.

"My team believed in me more than I did. I want to thank my coach who joined this year, with ups and downs we showed now it's working."
