The suspension will be in place for an initial period of 90 days

Luis Rubiales, the Spanish football federation president, has been provisionally suspended from the role by world governing body Fifa.

Despite mounting pressure, Rubiales has refused to resign after kissing Spanish footballer Jenni Hermoso on the lips following the Women's World Cup final.

However, Fifa has now intervened in the matter by provisionally suspending Rubiales from all football-related activities at national and international levels.

Fifa opened disciplinary proceedings against Rubiales on Friday.

The suspension will be in place for an initial period of 90 days, pending the disciplinary proceedings against Rubiales.

The federation (RFEF) has vowed to take legal against Hermoso, who has said she did not consent to the kiss.

Rafael del Amo, a senior figure at the RFEF has stepped down from his position and condemned Rubiales' actions.

He said: "I have presented my resignation after seeing that Luis Rubiales continues to head the Spanish federation.

"I owe a lot of things to Luis but what happened in the final is unacceptable."

Spain beat England 1-0 to secure their first-ever Women's World Cup title in Australia last weekend.

On Friday, Rubiales told a press conference he would not resign despite many calling for him to step down.

He said: "Do you think this [incident] is so serious that I should go, after the best management in the history of Spanish football?

"Let me tell you: I'm not going to resign. I'm not going to resign. I'm not going to resign.

"I've come under a lot of pressure. Perhaps somebody will look to remove me on Monday. But we live in a country of laws.

"Is a consensual kiss enough to remove me? I'm going to fight until the end.

"I hope the law is followed, and that as there's no reason to [remove me], it won't happen."
