The Scotland international has opened up on the three matches against the Wallabies

Finn Russell has insisted he's got no plans to retire any time soon after the 32-year-old won the Howden Player of the Series award following his exploits for the British and Irish Lions against Australia.

The rugby star was impressive in all three matches Down Under, even though the Wallabies won the third and final Test on Saturday.

The Lions had gone into the clash hoping for a first series whitewash over their rivals since 1904.

That didn't happen, however, with Australia impressive as they won 22-12 to restore some pride.

At the age of 32, Russell is approaching the twilight years of his career.

Yet the Scot had insisted he feels he's got plenty of rugby left him in, with the veteran also praising his time with the Lions this summer.

"It’s a special achievement — one I didn’t think I’d reach," he said after being named the Player of the Series.

"But it’s not just about me. You can’t do this without the boys, the coaches, and the management. Representing the jersey with pride is what matters.

"I’ve loved the tour. The weather wasn’t great today, but the boys and coaches have been brilliant.

"Playing a different style, travelling together, seeing the country — it’s been amazing on and off the pitch.

"Last week could’ve gone either way. Credit to them — they were excellent tonight.

"We’ll reflect on missed chances, but this group won’t be together again. It’s not the fairytale ending, but it’s still something special.

"I’ve always loved rugby, even through the tough times. I’ve got experience, I’m still fit, and I feel like I’ve got good rugby left in me."

While Russell was pleased with his performances this summer, Dan Sheehan was disappointed that the Lions weren't able to finish the series on a high.

"It's a bit gutting to be honest," he said.

"Our aim at the start of the tour was a 3-0 victory and fair play to the Wallabies. They came out firing tonight in extremely physical, tough conditions for everyone but all credit to them. What a series. Every game has been close.

"It is disappointing to be honest. It's not what we wanted tonight and it leaves a bit of a sour taste.

"It's been a one of a kind journey for me."

Australia captain Harry Wilson, meanwhile, was pleased his side were able to finish the series on a high.

"I’m just so proud of the team. We were hurting but we came out punching in front of 83,000 people — you’ve got to be proud," he said.

"We know you’ve spoken before about what it means to wear that jersey. You don’t come out here and just go through the motions. We’ve worn that jersey with pride and got the win.

"For us, it’s a great bit of momentum heading into the Rugby Championship. We’re off to South Africa in two weeks, which is going to be a heck of a challenge, so it’s great to get that boost before going over there."
