Chris Froome has undergone surgery following a serious crash that left him with multiple injuries.

The British cycling legend was airlifted to hospital following a horror crash in France during a training session on earlier this week.

The four-time Tour de France winner suffered a collapsed lung, five fractured ribs and a broken lumbar vertebra.

But the latest update is a positive one, with his social media account revealing that the 40-year-old had undergone surgery.

A statement read: "We can confirm that Chris has successfully undergone surgery following his recent injuries.

"The procedures went as planned, and Chris is currently recovering in hospital under the care of his medical team.

"He is in good spirits and grateful for the excellent medical support he has received.

"Chris and his family would like to thank fans, friends, and the cycling community for their concern and kind messages during this time."

Froome crashed while on a training ride on Wednesday before he was airlifted to a hospital in Toulon.

Froome's injuries are so serious that there is no chance that he will be able to end the season and might even call time on his incredible career.

It would be a sad ending for the legendary athlete, who is one of the most successful cyclists of all time.

Froome is already approaching the end of his five-year contract with Israel Premier-Tech, a deal he signed in 2021.

The Briton is arguably one of this country's greatest sportsmen, winning the Tour de France on four different occasions in 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017.

He also won the Giro d'Italia in 2018 and the Vuelta a Espana in 2011 and 2017 with all of his titles coming while he was with Team Sky.

However, this is not the first time that Froome has suffered a serious crash, having endured a brutal collision during the 2019 Criterium du Dauphine.

The incident was a turning point in Froome's career, with the cycling legend never truly regaining his form following the horrific crash.

That crash left Froome in intensive care, suffering a fractured femur, elbow, ribs and pelvis.
