The England international could be set to leave Tottenham this week

Earlier in the summer, Manchester United wanted to sign Harry Kane.

However, after opting to recruit Rasmus Hojlund from Serie A side Atalanta instead, they're now well and truly out of the running for the England international.

According to The Sun, United abandoned their pursuit of Kane 'early on'.

And several factors were behind their thinking, including the 30-year-old's 'shock' wage demands of £577,000 a week.

It's said United boss Erik ten Hag was 'full of admiration' for Kane - something that's understandable given the striker's stunning goalscoring form over the years.

And after Kane made it clear how much he'd want in order to move to Old Trafford, the Red Devils decided to pull the plug.

Ten Hag doesn't want any of his players earning more than the rest.

Marcus Rashford is now United's best-paid star, with the 25-year-old academy graduate recently signing a new deal worth £325,000 a week.

The report says United also feared 'protracted' dealings with Tottenham supremo Daniel Levy, who has long made it clear he wants Kane to stay.

And with Hojlund a decade younger than Kane, the fallen giants decided to fork out an initial £64million to bring the Denmark international to the Premier League.

For some, the youngster represents a gamble.

Hojlund scored just nine goals for Atalanta last season, even if his potential is clear for all to see.

But Ten Hag is 'convinced' the 20-year-old can shine at the highest level - which is why he's sanctioned such a dizzying deal.

The Dutchman 'loves' the way Hojlund can sense a goalscoring opportunity.

And he also likes the former Atalanta and Sturm Graz star for his pressing and ability to run in behind opponents.

Reacting to Hojlund's arrival, United chief John Murtough said: “Rasmus is a truly exceptional talent; he possesses technical and physical attributes which rank him amongst the best players in the world for his age group.

“Working under Erik ten Hag and his coaches will provide Rasmus with the perfect development platform; everyone across the club will ensure that he is given the time and all the support required to reach his immense potential

“Throughout the summer we have acted quickly and decisively to secure our primary targets early in the transfer window.

“This will ensure that Erik and his coaches have the best opportunity to prepare the squad to push for further success in the exciting campaign ahead.”

As for Kane, it'll be interesting to see what happens with his future.

Bayern Munich are still pursuing a deal for the Tottenham striker, having lodged a final £86.24m bid for the forward.

Spurs, however, are in no mood to negotiate.

Tottenham want to keep Kane at the club, even if they run the risk of the player leaving for nothing in 12 months' time.
