Tiger Woods was expected to make his return to competitive golf at the Players Championship next week.

Tiger Woods will not be competing at the Players Championship next week after missing the deadline to be in the field.

The 15-time major champion withdrew from the Genesis Invitational last month as he was carted off the course midway through his round.

His withdrawal and the manner of it prompted questions on whether he had suffered another injury setback.

Woods' camp quickly denied that was the case, stating it was due to an illness.

The 48-year-old posted on social media shortly after the tournament that he was "feeling better" with an expectation that he would play in an event before The Masters.

After missing the Arnold Palmer Invitational, it was expected that Woods would choose to play at TPC Sawgrass.

However, he's missed the 5pm deadline to feature in next week's tournament with doubts being raised on his future in the game.

One X user wrote: "Tiger Woods is DONE. Old, injured, non-competitive. Not far off just hitting a tee shot at Augusta."

Another posted: "Folks, I think it’s time to accept Tiger is in the middle of the end of his career."

A third said: "This is the end."

One other message simply read: "It's over."

Another wrote: "Gotta stop with all the tiger hype, unfortunately it’s over he’s just a prop now."

By not appearing at TPC Sawgrass, Woods looks unable to achieve what he had set out to do in 2024 by appearing in one tournament a month.

After making his long-awaited comeback at the Hero World Challenge, Woods confidently stated he would be able to play relatively regularly this year.

"If you ask me right now I'm a little bit sore. But once a month seems reasonable," he said at the time.

"It gives me a couple of weeks to recover, a week to tune up.

"Maybe I can get into a rhythm. That's what the plan was going into next year and I don't see why that would change."

Now he looks unlikely to play before the Masters next month with only three more events before the Augusta major.
