Team Europe has retained the Ryder Cup after withstanding a ferocious American fightback on a pulsating final day at Bethpage Black, while also winning the tournament outright 15-13.
Shane Lowry was the man to deliver the decisive half-point, draining a nerveless putt on the 18th green to spark jubilant celebrations among Luke Donald’s side before Tyrrell Hatton did the rest.
The day had started with the US trailing 12-5, needing a record-breaking comeback to reclaim the trophy.
When Cameron Young, Justin Thomas, and Xander Schauffele secured the first points of Sunday’s singles, the New York crowd dared to believe that the Miracle of Medinah might finally be avenged.

The home side were riding a wave of momentum, and for a brief spell the pressure seemed to weigh heavily on the Europeans.
Yet Europe’s experienced core held their nerve, with Lowry ultimately the hero before Hatton stepped up as well.
The decisive drama came in Lowry's match against Russell Henley. The Irishman, whose passion has embodied Europe’s charge all week, arrived at the 17th all square but held firm under intense pressure to stay on par.

On the 18th tee, Lowry sent a towering drive down the fairway to heap the pressure on his opponent.
Henley blinked first, finding a bunker with his tee shot before producing a superb recovery to within 10 feet of the hole.
But when the American’s putt slid agonisingly past, Lowry had the chance to ensure Europe retained their trophy.

"I can't believe that ball went in. I stood over it and went 'this is it'.
"The Ryder Cup means everything to me. I won the Open in Ireland but the Ryder Cup is everything.
