Rain has delayed the tournament at Quail Hollow

Rory McIlroy was seen swearing in frustration after rain caused chaos at the PGA Championship on Saturday.

The 36-year-old has entered the tournament as the favourite given his recent Masters triumph, but has struggled to find his usual consistency during the event at Quail Hollow so far.

On Saturday, McIlroy was hoping to resume his bid for another glory at a major - only for the claxon to sound, interrupting play.

This is due to dangerous weather, with the field set to split into threesomes to speed up play later in the day.

McIlroy was working to the first tee when the claxon sounded - and footage shows the 36-year-old appearing to say 'f**k off' in frustration, though he did have a wry smile on his face.

The golfer finds himself nine shots off half-way leader Jhonattan Vega, who has been the pick of the bunch so far.

The PGA Championship released a statement addressing the weather delays, saying: “Due to dangerous weather still in the area, the third round of the PGA Championship will now feature threesomes off split tees from 11:43 a.m. - 1:55 p.m (4:43pm - 6:55pm BST).

"Revised starting times will be released shortly by the PGA of America.”

Local reports state that they're hoping the storms will pass through the area quickly, with organisers hopeful the delay will last two hours at maximum.

Meanwhile, speaking before the tournament earlier this week, McIlroy opened up on his Masters win at Augusta in April.

The Northern Irishman confessed that he felt he'd be less 'on edge' after ending his decade-long drought for a major, something he also feels will benefit wife Erica Stoll and their four-year-old daughter, Poppy.

He said: "I probably won't be quite as on edge as I have been for the last few years when I've been at major championships.

"I'll probably be a little bit better to be around for my family, and I'll be a little more relaxed. I think overall it will be a good thing.”

On his targets for the future, he added: "I still want to create a lot of other highlights and high points, but I'm not sure if any other win will live up to what happened a few weeks ago.

"I'm still going to set myself goals. I'm still going to try to achieve certain things.

"But I sit here knowing that that very well could be the highlight of my career."

McIlroy previously won the PGA Championship in 2012, beating David Lynn and Justin Rose to secure glory.

He followed that up with another triumph two years later, with Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler overcome on that occasion.
