World number 158 Chris Gotterup stunned the golfing world by defeating Rory McIlroy to claim the Scottish Open title at the Renaissance Club, earning £1.2m in prize money and securing his debut appearance at next week's Open Championship at Royal Portrush.
The 25-year-old American, who began the final round level with McIlroy at 11 under par, showed remarkable composure to card a closing 66 and finish on 15 under, two shots clear of the Northern Irishman.
McIlroy, seeking his 30th PGA Tour victory, faltered on the back nine and had to settle for a share of second place alongside England's Marco Penge on 13 under.
Despite bogeying his opening hole, Gotterup recovered brilliantly with birdies at the third, seventh and eighth holes to stay in contention.

The American seized control on the back nine with further birdies at the 10th and 12th, where his tee shot landed within three feet of the cup.
McIlroy's challenge unravelled after early birdies at the fourth and fifth holes. The four-time major champion made par on his final 10 holes, missing several birdie opportunities including at the par-5 16th where he reached the edge of the green in two shots.

Gotterup extended his advantage with another birdie at the 16th before securing victory with a two-putt par at the final hole.
"It's just awesome. I'm not going to be able to keep it together," Gotterup said on CBS, fighting back tears.
"It's awesome. I can't wait to see everyone, and I'm playing in the Open next week."
The American needed a top-three finish at the Renaissance Club to qualify for the Open Championship.
His victory represents only his second PGA Tour title, following his inaugural win at the Myrtle Beach Classic last year.
Gotterup's triumph came after he posted a course-record equalling 61 on Friday, which had given him a two-shot lead at the halfway stage of the tournament.
The victory makes Gotterup just the sixth American man to win the Scottish Open in the event's history.
He entered the week without a top-10 finish this season and hadn't recorded one since his Myrtle Beach triumph.
The Maryland native's win propels him to 39th in the FedEx Cup standings, securing his place in the playoffs and next season's signature events.
His previous best major championship result was a tied-23rd finish at last month's US Open.
Matt Fitzpatrick and Denmark's Nicolai Hojgaard rounded out the top five, whilst Scotland's Robert MacIntyre finished on eight under par.
