The Briton struggled at Oakmont Country Club as JJ Spaun secured glory on Sunday night

Erica Stoll was absent from the US Open over the weekend as Rory McIlroy's stuttering form continued at Oakmont Country Club.

McIlroy was on top of the world back in April when he won the Masters, a feat that saw him become the first European golfer in history to complete the career Grand Slam.

Ever since, however, the 36-year-old has struggled for consistency.

That was the story once again on Sunday, with McIlroy struggling at the US Open as JJ Spaun secured the first major of his career.

When the Northern Irishman won the Masters two months ago, Erica - and the couple's four-year-old daughter Poppy - were cheering him on from the sidelines.

She wasn't present at the PGA Championship, however, and was also absent from the US Open this weekend.

According to the Daily Mail, however, Erica's absence was likely down to the fact that the family are preparing to move back to the United Kingdom - having resided in Florida.

It emerged before the US Open that the couple would be moving into a mansion in Wentworth, Surrey.

A year ago, McIlroy and Erica had appeared to be heading for divorce.

Reports suggested that Erica had become 'lonely' in their marriage due to the pair effectively living separate lives due to his golf commitments.

In the end, however, the pair decided to reconcile - with McIlroy saying they'd realised the best way forward was 'together', instead of separately.

While they're moving to Wentworth, the couple won't be putting their home in Florida up for sale.

That's because McIlroy will still be able to use it as a base for when he's competing on the PGA Tour.

Meanwhile, speaking after his woes at the US Open, McIlroy admitted he was looking forward to returning to Europe.

"I'm looking forward to just getting back to Europe in general," he said.

"Obviously I've got one more week over here. Play Hartford next week [for the Travelers Championship on the PGA Tour].

"We've got a lot to look forward to, got our new house in London, play the Scottish [Open] and then obviously The Open at Portrush.

"Just trying to get myself in the right frame of mind to approach that.

"I feel like playing an Open at Portrush already and sort of at least remembering what those feelings were like and those feelings that I was probably unprepared for at the time.

"It will be my first time sort of in public back home after winning the Masters. It should be a really nice week.

"I climbed my Everest in April, and I think after you do something like that, you've got to make your way back down, and you've got to look for another mountain to climb.

“An Open at Portrush is certainly one of those.

"If I can't get motivated to get up for an Open Championship at home, then I don't know what can motivate me. I just need to get myself in the right frame of mind. I probably haven't been there the last few weeks.

"But as I said, getting home and having a couple weeks off before that, hopefully feeling refreshed and rejuvenated, will get me in the right place again."
