The 31-year-old obliged after a request from a golf fan

Aaron Rai experienced a surreal end to the greatest week of his life when, moments after winning the PGA Championship, he was asked to autograph a baby.

The 31-year-old had just completed one of the most remarkable performances in recent major history at Aronimink, becoming the first player from England in 107 years to lift the Wanamaker Trophy.

But amid the celebrations in Pennsylvania, one jubilant supporter decided that a hat or programme was not memorable enough.

Instead, the fan held out his infant child, dummy still firmly in place, and asked Rai to sign the baby's babygrow with a permanent marker.

The unusual moment quickly spread across social media, with golf fans amused by the extraordinary request.

"The baby will remember that moment for his entire life," one supporter joked.

Another wrote: "Getting the newly crowned PGA champion to sign your baby is a legendary move."

Rai was in no position to refuse after producing the finest round of his career.

Starting the day two shots off the lead, the Wolverhampton-born golfer carded a magnificent five-under-par 65 to finish the tournament on nine under.

That left him three strokes clear of Jon Rahm and Alex Smalley, with Rory McIlroy among the big names left trailing in his wake.

Rai's victory was sparked by a dramatic eagle at the ninth, where he holed a 40-foot putt after a shaky front nine.

He then seized control with birdies at the 11th, 13th and 16th before delivering the decisive blow on the par-three 17th.

Facing a putt from 68 feet, Rai rolled the ball across the green and watched as it disappeared into the hole, prompting one of the loudest roars of the week.

The putt effectively secured his maiden major title and transformed him from respected tour professional into one of golf's most unlikely champions.

Rai, known for his understated demeanour, his two gloves and his unusual habit of using headcovers on his irons, admitted he was struggling to process what he had achieved.

"It's been a bit of a frustrating season, so to be standing here is definitely outside of my wildest imagination," he said.

"I think it is really good consistency over the last few weeks with practice.

"My body feels great and I have really enjoyed the course this week.

"It is phenomenal to be stood here."

The triumph also earned Rai the winner's cheque of $3.69million (£2.7m), a lifetime exemption into the PGA Championship and a place in golfing history alongside Jim Barnes, the last Englishman to win the event in 1919.
