The Hammers sit 19th in the Premier League table, having endured a wretched start to the new season

West Ham boss Nuno Espirito Santo has ripped into his players following the club's nightmare 2-1 defeat to Leeds United at Elland Road on Friday night.

The Hammers went into the clash hoping for their first victory under their new manager, who arrived as a replacement for Graham Potter at the end of September.

They had already lost to Arsenal and Brentford prior to the match in Yorkshire, without scoring.

And though Mateus Fernandes netted the first goal of the Nuno era, goals from Brenden Aaronson and Joe Rodon were enough for the hosts to secure a crucial three points in their quest to avoid relegation to the Championship.

Pressure is already mounting on Nuno, with West Ham already tasting defeat on seven occasions in the league this term.

And the former Nottingham Forest, Tottenham and Wolves boss was unimpressed by his side's abject display, with the 51-year-old failing to mince his words in the aftermath.

"We started the game very bad, very bad in the way we approach our defensive situation in the box. We allow the contact, we allow the second shot on target," he fumed.

"Then comes a corner. It’s a goal from a corner, something that we slightly improved in the previous game, but they punished us again.

"Commitment, focus and responsibility is all that we want from our players. We still have time, but let's not hide ourselves.

"We have to be [better] immediately and it starts tomorrow to work hard on a long week. We have to show at home a different situation."

Nuno then expressed a belief that his players were losing matches by themselves due to sloppy individual errors, rather than the strength of the opposition.

"It’s very hard to take," he continued. "It’s disappointing after the preparation and all these things that we mentioned. We knew and we are being punished by things that we know.

"We have to give credit to the teams [who beat us] but I truly believe that we are the ones that are losing the games.

"We are the ones that are making the mistakes. We are the ones that we should blame ourselves.

"I credit always our opponents. When you win, maybe you don’t find so many things [to work on] and when you lose all the questions come.

"For me, as I see it, it’s an immediate reaction from ourselves [that we need]."

West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen, meanwhile, admitted that the club were 'in trouble' and that they need to improve immediately after yet another significant setback.

"This is the Premier League and we need to really pull our finger out. As we're in a real situation," he stated.

"We have to face the reality of that, the sooner it starts hitting everyone, it needs to change.

"You can't come out here and say anything different. You can't say anything positive or anything in that way.

"You have to face the reality of where we are: second bottom and we're in trouble now. We have to accept that.

"It's just not brave enough, not doing the jobs good enough until the end.

"We get a goal back, it's disallowed.

"It always felt like one goal and you always get a bit of confidence when you score. We did that, it was too late. Not good enough."

West Ham are next in action against Newcastle on November 2 (2pm).

As for Leeds, they'll be hoping to build on their victory over the Hammers when they lock horns with Brighton on November 1 (3pm).
