The Red Devils legend suggested a shock re-signing for one former Manchester United player

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has revealed the three players he believes the club should sign to improve their struggling squad.

With the Red Devils languishing in 16th place in the Premier League following a woeful campaign, Rooney suggested the club should make significant changes, including a surprise move to re-sign former goalkeeper David de Gea.

The ex-United striker also identified Napoli striker Victor Osimhen and Crystal Palace's FA Cup-winning captain Marc Guehi as his ideal transfers to strengthen Ruben Amorim's team.

Rooney said: "I'd sign David de Gea back. I think Manchester United have missed him and I think he would do an amazing job."

The Spanish goalkeeper played for United between 2011 and 2023, making 545 appearances before leaving when contract negotiations broke down.

De Gea was without a club for over a year before signing for Fiorentina. Rooney suggested United have struggled in the goalkeeping department since his departure, with Andre Onana often failing to meet expectations.

For his second dream signing, Rooney identified Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, who is currently on loan at Galatasaray.

"The second I'd sign Osimhen as a number nine. He's a good striker and possibly available," Rooney explained.

The former United captain believes the Nigerian forward would provide the additional firepower needed to improve United's attacking options, which have struggled to deliver consistently throughout their disappointing campaign.

Completing Rooney's trio of dream signings is Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, who recently captained his side to FA Cup glory.

"The third one I'd sign, it would probably be difficult, but I'd try to sign Guehi from Crystal Palace. As a centre-back he'd have a really good impact," said Rooney.

The England international has attracted significant interest from top clubs, with Rooney acknowledging that securing his signature would be challenging despite the potential defensive stability he could bring to United's backline.

United still have an opportunity to salvage something from their disappointing season as they prepare to face Tottenham in the Europa League final on Wednesday.

Victory in that match would secure Champions League football for next season under new manager Ruben Amorim.

However, regardless of the outcome, Rooney believes major changes will be needed if United are to progress next campaign.
