Brazilian star looks set to reject a host of other clubs to join the Red Devils

According to reports, Wolves star Matheus Cunha is set to join Manchester United after the conclusion of the season this weekend.

The fee is believed to be £62.5million, due to a release clause in the Brazilian’s contract.

Cunha, 25, signed a new contract at Wolves in February this year, adding the significant release clause that Manchester United will be forced to trigger.

There was a host of Premier League and Saudi teams that were interested in the forward, however, it has been reported that Cunha has made the decision to join Manchester United, as he feels they are one of the biggest clubs in the world and he “loves the club”.

With a game still to play in the Premier League this season, Wolves boss Vitor Pereira has commented on the situation: “I really don’t know. I know he’s my player, and he’s committed. We’ll see, but he’s happy.”

Manchester United icon Gary Neville had his say on the transfer, claiming the Red Devils were “desperate” for recruits of Cunha’s attributes.

He said: "Man Utd are desperate in that position. They need someone who can beat players, they need someone who's equally as good running through the middle with the ball and travelling with the ball, and go out wide and support the wing-back.

"So he's a type of player that you could see Manchester United being interested in, that would suit this system that Ruben Amorim wants to play.”

Fellow pundit Jamie Carragher was quick to agree with his pal on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football.

“I think it’s a great signing. I think he’s a brilliant player and I love watching him play”, Carragher said.

“He was in my team of the season at the halfway point, so he had a great start to the season. I watched him at Man City a few weeks ago, he looked really sharp, quick.

“We know how the manager at Manchester United wants to play, with two number 10s in his team. I think he’ll fit perfectly.”

Before the deal is announced, Manchester United have a huge Europa League final clash against Tottenham Hotspur, which would see the winner gain Champions League qualification.

The Champions League is a competition new boy Cunha is familiar with, having played 12 times in the tournament with previous teams Red Bull Leipzig and Atletico Madrid.

Fortunately for Cunha, Carragher felt more confident of United’s chances instead of Tottenham’s: “I think [Manchester United] are used to winning big games.

“I don’t think there’s too much to pick between the teams, we can see that in the league table. I just think about what Manchester United have done over the last few years, they have still won trophies at the end of seasons.

“They are a club that are used to trophies, Tottenham aren’t. When you take that into a final, Manchester United will believe they a win. I’m not sure Tottenham Hotspur will believe they can.”

Cunha joined Wolves from Atletico Madrid for a club-record £42m in July 2023, following a successful loan spell.

The Brazilian has 48 goal contributions in 90 games for the club, including 17 goals in 34 appearances this year, averaging a goal every other game for a side that has struggled for form throughout the majority of the season.

He has also represented his country on 13 occasions, scoring his first international goal against bitter rivals Argentina in March.
