Wayne Rooney's friend sets record straight after former England star was spotted drinking with two women

Rooney was described as being 'worst for wear' and some fans expressed concerns for the veteran, who has admitted to issues with alcohol in the past.

However, a friend of the couple has now elaborated on the incident and set the record straight on what exactly happened.

They told the Daily Mail: "Wayne hasn’t done anything wrong."

They then proceeded to explain that Rooney had been out with another friend when he sat next to a woman and chatted to her. It is made abundantly clear, however, that he then proceeded to go home alone.

As for Coleen, the insider says that she's 'aware of the situation' and feels that her husband, due to his fame, becomes a target.

"Coleen is aware of the situation and is extremely protective of Wayne," they stated.

"She knows he has a drinking problem but is disappointed in the people who take advantage of him when he drinks.

"Her view has long been that women circle him - and that’s how these situations arise. Whatever cruel rumours emerge about Wayne, he’s always just been focused on Coleen and the family."

As a player, Rooney became one of the best players of his generation - winning five Premier League titles, as well as the FA Cup and Champions League - during a glittering stint at United under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Controversy was, however, rarely too far away.

Rooney was unfaithful to Coleen at times as a player, with the former footballer making headlines in 2008 and 2009 when he slept with prostitutes.

The duo have, however, often been able to work through their problems - having been together since they were teenagers - and have proceeded to build a loving and lasting relationship.

Rooney, speaking back in September, opened up on his issues with alcohol and praised wife Coleen for saving him.

"I honestly believe if she weren’t there, I’d be dead," stated the 40-year-old.

"Coleen is the best. I’ve made mistakes in the past which are well-documented but... she keeps me on [the right] path and she’s done it for 20-odd years," he said.

"I wanted to go out and enjoy my time with my friends and have a night out. It got to a point where I went too far – that was a moment in my life where I was struggling massively with alcohol.

"I didn’t think I could turn to anyone. I didn’t really want to because I didn’t want to put that burden on anyone.

"I just drank for two days straight. At the weekend, I’d score two goals - and then I’d go back and drink for two days straight again.

"She’s helped me control that massively. She’s managed me because I needed managing."

As for Coleen, she previously said of their marriage: "We’ve had our ups and we’ve had our downs but we’ve had experiences that you would never have imagined."
