Tottenham will be playing in next year's Champions League after winning the Europa League

Tottenham should not be playing in the Champions League next season despite winning the Europa League.

That is the verdict from former Spurs player Gus Poyet, who disagrees that any club winning the competition should be given a pathway into the superior European competition.

Tottenham ended their long wait for a trophy last week when they beat Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final.

It was the first time they had tasted silverware since 2008 when they beat Chelsea in the League Cup final.

As well as finally lifting silverware, it will also see Tottenham ply their trade in the Champions League next season alongside elite clubs such as Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Liverpool.

United, meanwhile, will not play any football in Europe next season - with both clubs needing Europa League success after torrid campaigns domestically.

Spurs finished 17th in the Premier League - one spot above the relegation zone - while United had to settle for 15th.

Between them, they lost 40 league games and conceded 119 goals.

And former Tottenham player Poyet does not believe that winning the Europa League should give a club the chance to take part in the Champions League.

Speaking to Casino Sites, the Uruguayan said: "I’ll get straight to the point here. I am not a fan of the Europa League winners going into the Champions League.

"I also think the competition should be the European Cup as teams are finishing 4th and 5th in a division and qualifying for the tournament.

"It’s not a Champions trophy so given they reworked the group stage into a League system, they should re name the tournament as well.

"Looking at the final on Wednesday between Spurs & Man Utd, neither team should be qualifying for the Champions League.

"Finishing 16th and 17th in the Premier League shouldn’t give you a chance of qualifying for the major European tournament.

"But, these are the current rules and it is a massive game for both clubs. I think this is the best chance of silverware Spurs have had in a long while.

"There is no fear factor with Man Utd any more and when Spurs came up against Liverpool in the Champions League final, the Liverpool side were a very good team with outstanding players."
