The Three Lions has come under fire for his squad selection

Thomas Tuchel’s shock England World Cup squad has sparked fury in his native Germany, with one major newspaper branding the Three Lions manager’s controversial selection calls “madness”.

The former Chelsea boss stunned world football last week after leaving out several of England’s biggest stars for this summer’s tournament, including Cole Palmer, Phil Foden and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

All three players have endured difficult campaigns for different reasons, whether through poor form, injuries or inconsistent involvement at club level.

But despite their struggles, many supporters still expected Tuchel to find room for such high-profile talent in his 26-man squad.

Instead, the German has opted for a group he believes offers greater balance, unity and togetherness as England chase a first major international trophy since 1966.

Tuchel has repeatedly stressed the importance of “unselfish” players and strong dressing-room chemistry since taking charge of the national side earlier this year.

However, his ruthless approach has left many in Germany stunned.

Writing for leading German outlet BILD, sports editor Henning Feindt tore into Tuchel’s decision to axe some of England’s most recognisable stars.

“Tuchel has opted to leave out exceptional players like Cole Palmer, Phil Foden and Trent Alexander-Arnold,” Feindt wrote.

“Three of the ten most valuable players - CUT OUT.”

The journalist then compared the situation to Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann dropping some of his own biggest names ahead of a major tournament.

“That would be like Nagelsmann dropping Florian Wirtz and Joshua Kimmich from the team in addition to the out-of-form Jamal Musiala,” he added.

“In short: madness - but also incredibly exciting.”

Feindt also claimed Tuchel’s England future could hinge entirely on whether his gamble pays off in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

According to the German journalist, the 52-year-old may find himself under enormous pressure if England fall short following such bold selection decisions.

Despite the backlash, former England defender Jamie Carragher has strongly defended Tuchel’s thinking.

The ex-Liverpool star believes England managers of the past often became too focused on fitting star players into the same side rather than building the strongest collective unit.

“We were probably all surprised by one or two names missing out,” Carragher told Sky Sports.

“But I really admired the manager.

“It shouldn't be too much of a shock when you think of the way he has spoken since he's become the England manager, about how important harmony is within the camp.”

Carragher argued Tuchel’s squad appears built around personality and togetherness rather than simply selecting the 26 most gifted footballers available.

“When I look at that camp, it just felt to me he picked harmony and energy over talent really,” he explained.

“He reiterated that it wasn't about the 26 most talented English players.

“What he sees as vitally important is actually being a team, being together, and it's not about individuals.”

England will face Croatia, Ghana and Panama in their Group L matches this summer.
