Steven Gerrard's best managerial success came at Rangers where he won the Scottish Premiership in 2021

Steven Gerrard is among the candidates being considered for the Rangers managerial position as the club intensifies its search for Philippe Clement's successor.

The former Liverpool midfielder, who previously led Rangers to the 2021 Scottish Premiership title, features on a longlist that reportedly runs into double figures.

Gerrard has been out of work since leaving Saudi Pro League club Al-Ettifaq earlier this season, where his team was struggling near the relegation zone.

Barry Ferguson has been in interim charge at Ibrox since Clement departed in February.

With just three games remaining in the Scottish Premiership season, Rangers are now beginning the process of appointing a long-term manager or head coach.

The Glasgow side is being linked with a takeover by an American consortium led by pharmaceutical tycoon Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises, who have made finding a new boss a priority.

Former Wolves manager Gary O'Neil is also under consideration for the Rangers job, alongside ex-Luton Town boss Rob Edwards.

Russell Martin, who had a loan spell at Rangers as a player before managing at MK Dons, Swansea and Southampton, is another name on the list.

At this stage, the race appears to be wide open.

Gerrard's potential return to Ibrox comes after mixed fortunes in his managerial career since leaving Rangers in 2021.

His time at Aston Villa proved disappointing, with the club struggling at the bottom of the Premier League table before his dismissal.

The Liverpool icon then moved to Saudi Arabia with Al-Ettifaq, but left earlier this season with the club plummeting towards the relegation zone.

Despite these setbacks, Gerrard's previous success at Rangers is viewed as a significant asset.

The team Gerrard built at Rangers went on to reach the Europa League final after his departure, with Giovanni van Bronckhorst at the helm when they lost to Eintracht Frankfurt in Seville.

Rangers' search for a new manager comes amid a competitive post-season scramble for managerial talent.

Several English clubs including West Bromwich Albion, Norwich City and Southampton are also in the market for new managers.

The American consortium's imminent takeover adds another layer of intrigue to the managerial search at Ibrox.
