The 33-year-old left Spurs on Wednesday after a decade at the club

Son Heung-Min was left bemused as an LA City Council member asked him to help the US win the 2026 World Cup, despite his South Korean nationality.

The awkward moment came during his first press conference as an LAFC player.

"No pressure... but when the World Cup comes, we're expecting a win here in Los Angeles," the councillor said.

The South Korean international then awkwardly collected an award, failing to correct the councillor.

Son has become a Premier League icon during his time in north London, scoring 173 times in 454 appearances.

The 33-year-old truly cemented his legendary status at the club after captaining Spurs to their first piece of silverware in 17 years.

They beat Manchester United to claim the Europa League title, catapulting the Lilywhites back into the Champions League.

The former Bayer Leverkusen winger also picked up the illustrious Puskas award for his spectacular solo effort against Burnley in 2019.

Wednesday saw Son confirm his £20million move to the West Coast, shattering the existing MLS transfer record of £16.5million when striker Emmanuel Latte Lath moved from Championship side Middlesbrough to Atlanta United.

"It's a dream come true. LA - what a city," Son said after his move on Wednesday.

Los Angeles is home to the largest Korean community outside of Korea itself, with Koreatown in LA housing over 120,000 residents making it the most densely populated area in the city.

Son continued by admitting the move was “not my first choice”, but he was immediately convinced by club co-president John Thorrington.

"If I'm honest, it was not my first choice. But the first call I had with [LAFC co-president] John after my season finished, he changed my mind, changed my heart, my brain.

"He showed me the destination where I should be. Now I'm here, I'm more than happy, I'm so excited.

"Los Angeles has such a rich history of champions, and I am here to help write the next chapter. I'm excited for this new challenge in MLS.

“I have come to LA to lift trophies and give everything for this club, this city, and its fans."

Son joins former teammate Hugo Lloris on the West Coast.

As the most valuable MLS side, LAFC have both commercial power and a trophy cabinet to boot.

Boasting a history of players such as Gareth Bale, Carlos Vela, and Olivier Giroud, the Californian side have won two Supporters’ Shields, the US Open Cup and the MLS Cup since their inaugural season in 2018.

Son played his final game for Spurs after his 10-year spell in his home country, as they drew 1-1 against Newcastle.

Prior to the match, the South Korean announced he had decided to leave the club, saying: “It was the most difficult decision I have made in my career. Such amazing memories. It was so hard to make the decision.”

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy said that he was “one of the greatest players to ever wear the famous Lilywhite shirt” and that the 33-year-old is “not only is he a wonderfully gifted footballer, but he's also an incredible human being.”
