The Ligue 1 player, who transferred permanently to Marseille from Old Trafford during the previous summer, now faces a choice regarding his international allegiance.

His eligibility to switch national teams stems from FIFA regulations permitting players with fewer than three competitive appearances before turning 21 to change their international representation.

Greenwood's international career with England concluded after a single appearance in 2020, when controversy arose during a trip to Iceland.

The player and team-mate Phil Foden were excluded from the squad after bringing women to the team accommodation, and Greenwood has not represented England at any level since that incident.

In early 2022, the footballer faced arrest on allegations including attempted rape, assault and coercive behaviour. The Crown Prosecution Service discontinued these charges twelve months later, citing the withdrawal of crucial witnesses and the emergence of new evidence.

The forward's absence from international football has now stretched to half a decade, during which time he departed United and established himself in French football.

Jamaica's football manager Steve McClaren has actively pursued Greenwood's services, maintaining regular communication with the player and his relatives.

"We are in contact all the time, with him and his family," McClaren stated in March. "I am very confident he only wants to play for Jamaica. It is up to him when he moves forward with that. The ball is in his court."

The winger could make his debut for the Reggae Boyz as early as next month during World Cup qualifying matches against Bermuda and Trinidad and Tobago.

FIFA's nationality rules require players to have been eligible for their new country when they represented their original nation, criteria which Greenwood satisfies.

McClaren's recruitment strategy extends beyond Greenwood, as Jamaica seeks to strengthen their squad by attracting British-born players with Caribbean heritage.

West Ham striker Michail Antonio made the switch in 2021, whilst Brentford defender Rico Henry remains another target for the national team.
