The Owls had already been handed a 12-point deduction back in October

Sheffield Wednesday have suffered a further setback in their fight for Championship survival after being hit with an additional six-point deduction, plunging their total from minus four to minus 10.

The club had already been reeling from a 12-point penalty imposed in October after entering administration.

This latest deduction leaves Wednesday in an ever-more precarious position: they now sit bottom of the table, 27 points adrift of safety, with Swansea City occupying 21st place on 17 points.

Even 23rd-placed Norwich City are 23 points ahead, underscoring the scale of Wednesday’s challenge and the near-certainty of relegation to League One unless a dramatic turnaround occurs.

The new sanction relates to breaches of EFL regulations governing payment obligations.

In a statement, the EFL confirmed both the deduction and a significant penalty for the club’s former owner, saying: “Sheffield Wednesday FC are to be deducted six points with immediate effect for multiple breaches of EFL regulations relating to payment obligations, with the club’s former owner, Mr Dejphon Chansiri, prohibited from being an owner or director of any EFL club for a period of three years.

“The sanctions on both the club and Mr Chansiri can be confirmed after the parties reached an agreement on the appropriate sanction which was subsequently ratified by the chair of the appointed independent disciplinary commission.”

Chansiri’s three-year ban brings a formal end to his troubled tenure, which concluded when Wednesday entered administration earlier this season.

Off the field, the club’s ownership situation remains in flux.

Reports suggest former Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has submitted a £20million offer to acquire the Yorkshire side.

Ashley, whose net worth is widely reported in the billions, is among several interested parties.

Administrators are also believed to be reviewing proposals from two US-based consortiums, with a total of four bids said to have been lodged to date.

One of the groups pursuing a takeover has reportedly floated an extraordinary and deeply controversial idea: merging Sheffield Wednesday with city rivals Sheffield United.

While no formal proposal is believed to be under consideration, even the suggestion of such a move has been met with alarm among supporters of both clubs, given the long-standing and intense rivalry between the two sides.

Meanwhile, uncertainty on the pitch is accompanied by potential transfer activity.

Former Manchester United defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah, currently a free agent after leaving Bayer Leverkusen in 2024, has been linked with a move to Hillsborough.

The 27-year-old, who made his senior United debut under Louis van Gaal on the same day as Marcus Rashford, is believed to be assessing options ahead of the winter window.

For now, however, the club’s immediate reality remains stark.

With a 10-point deficit and a sizeable gap to safety, Wednesday face a daunting challenge both on and off the pitch as they attempt to stabilise their financial situation, resolve their ownership issues, and salvage a season that continues to spiral.
