Fans were heard shouting: "Junior, die. Show your face, coward" at the president, while players faced chants of "Out, go away. Sons of b****es, out."

The ugly scenes marked a dramatic low point for a club accustomed to challenging at the summit of Spanish football and competing in European competition.

The confrontation intensified when hooded ultras subsequently arrived at the training ground, forcing Sevilla to call for police assistance.

Officers reportedly established a protective barrier around the squad to prevent any physical altercation with the masked supporters.

The club's predicament in the standings makes the situation all the more desperate, with Sevilla sitting just two points clear of Elche, who occupy the final relegation berth.

With only eight fixtures remaining in the campaign, the six-time Europa League winners face a genuine battle to preserve their top-flight status.

Real Oviedo, despite being rooted to the foot of the table with merely five victories from 30 matches, proved too strong.

Sillas addressed supporters following the defeat, stating: "It's a really bad feeling.

"We want to apologise to the fans and thank everyone who travelled to support us.

"We couldn't achieve anything here, and it's a pretty tough defeat."

The defender urged unity, adding: "We have to get through this together.

"The new coaching staff will help us. We all have to stick together, also for the fans, because they don't deserve this.

"We want to tell them that we're not going to give up until the next home game."
