Former Manchester City goalkeeper Scott Carson has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 40.
The former City and Liverpool star has been a common face over the last two decades of the sport, ending his career racking up 526 games for club and country.
Carson ended his career with two Champions League medals and also represented England four times throughout his career, travelling to the 2006 World Cup.
He announced his retirement on Instagram, where he said: “After an incredible journey between the posts, it’s time to hang up the gloves.

“Football has given me everything — memories, friendships, and moments I’ll never forget.
“Thank you to every teammate, coach, fan, and club that’s been part of my ride. It’s been an honour.”
Carson started his career at Leeds United before he joined the current Premier League champions as a back-up keeper in 2004, ahead of their Champions League-winning campaign.
He then went on to play for Sheffield Wednesday, Charlton, Aston Villa, Bursapor, Wigan Athletic, Derby County, and Manchester City.
The 40-year-old chose to leave the Etihad after six seasons as the backup stopper in the summer. He spent the first two years of his time on loan from Derby.
He played a crucial role in helping Ederson get prepared for English football.

Carson recently told City media: “When I first came in, his English wasn’t great but we used to communicate with each other even without a conversation.
“I’d laugh at him and he’d laugh at me! I was there for him if he needed me and I hope I did help him in some way for the years he was here.”

In 2022, Pep Guardiola heaped praise on the shotstopper: “We are delighted. He is very important to us behind the scenes.
“His chemistry with Ederson and Zack Steffen is fundamental in the locker room. People listen when he speaks. He made the biggest save (of the game).”
Former City team-mates were full of praise for the 40-year-old on his retirement post.
