Paul Mullin, one of the club's greatest players, is departing on loan

Ryan Reynolds has posted a heartfelt tribute to Paul Mullin after the striker's season-long loan move to Wigan Athletic was confirmed on Monday.

The Wrexham co-owner shared a video of Mullin's highlights on social media, accompanied by an emotional message acknowledging the forward's crucial role in the club's remarkable journey.

"I can't imagine seeing Mulls on loan and in another kit. We wouldn't be where we are without his heart, skill and work ethic," Reynolds wrote in the caption.

"We love you, Paul Mullin. SPM."

The striker, who has become a club legend during his four years at Wrexham, responded to Reynolds' message with a love heart emoji.

Mullin's departure means he will miss out on his dream of playing in the Championship, despite Wrexham's promotion to the second tier for the first time.

The 30-year-old striker, who has never played at Championship level, had spoken openly about what it would mean to him.

"Just to play one game in the Championship with Wrexham would be worth absolutely everything," Mullin had explained earlier.

"It would be the icing on the cake for this story and who knows where it could end."

During his time at Wrexham, Mullin scored an impressive 105 goals in 165 appearances, playing a pivotal role in the club's rise from non-league to League One.

Mullin's fall from grace began with a series of injury problems and the arrival of new strikers, including Jay Rodriguez and Sam Smith last season.

The forward was not included in a single matchday squad by manager Phil Parkinson from February onwards, with competition intensifying after Wrexham signed Ryan Hardie from Plymouth earlier this week.

His final appearance for the club came against Peterborough in the EFL Trophy, where he missed a penalty in a shootout defeat.

The Welsh striker had expressed his frustration about being continuously left out of the squad on Welcome to Wrexham, and had already predicted his limited future role, stating: "From a personal point of view, I don't think I'll have any part to play in it from here on in."

Mullin joins Wigan Athletic, who finished 15th in League One last season, 36 points behind automatically-promoted Wrexham.

The Latics manager Ryan Lowe will be hoping the striker can add firepower to a side that scored just 40 goals across the entire third-tier campaign, the lowest in the division.

Whilst Mullin has only managed six goals in 46 League One appearances, his record of 93 goals in League Two demonstrates his scoring ability.

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson wished the striker well, saying: "It's a good opportunity for him to get back to playing regular first-team football and I'm sure he's going to be a great signing for Wigan Athletic."
