The France international has become a divisive figure at the Bernabeu amid the club's difficult campaign

Real Madrid insiders fear Kylian Mbappe does not want to play at the Santiago Bernabeu again this season amid growing tensions behind the scenes at the Spanish giants.

The France international was absent on Sunday night as Real Madrid Los Blancos suffered a damaging 2-0 defeat to FC Barcelona at the Nou Camp, a result that confirmed Hansi Flick's men as LaLiga champions for a second consecutive year.

The 27-year-old watched the match from home in Madrid and posted a message of support on Instagram during the game.

However, the timing of the post drew criticism from some supporters because Real were already trailing by two goals when he uploaded it.

According to The Athletic, some figures within the club believe Mbappe would prefer to avoid appearing in any of Real's remaining home fixtures after being jeered by sections of the Bernabeu crowd on more than one occasion.

The France international has not played since the 1-1 draw with Real Betis Balompié on April 24, when he was substituted after reporting discomfort in his hamstring.

Although he has resumed training, uncertainty remains over when he will return to action.

There was previously optimism within the club last week that Mbappe would be available for El Clasico after taking part in Saturday's final training session.

But he was ultimately omitted from the squad after experiencing further discomfort.

That late setback is said to have added to frustrations among some members of the coaching and support staff, who reportedly felt there was a lack of clarity over his condition.

It has also emerged that Mbappe was involved in a disagreement with a member of the coaching staff during the build-up to the Betis match, contributing to what has been described as a strained atmosphere at the training ground.

Mbappe's representatives have, however, strongly rejected suggestions that his commitment has waned.

In a statement, his camp said: "A portion of the criticism is based on an over-interpretation of elements related to a recovery period strictly supervised by the club, and does not reflect the reality of Kylian's commitment and daily work for the team."

Real still have three LaLiga fixtures remaining, including home matches against Real Oviedo and Athletic Club.

Whether Mbappe features in either of those games remains uncertain.

Manager Alvaro Arbeloa offered no firm timetable following Sunday's defeat.

"There are two weeks left and depending on how his discomfort evolves, we will see whether he can play," he said.

"I would have liked him to be at 100 per cent and to be able to start."

Mbappe has scored 41 goals for Real this season. Arsenal and Liverpool have been linked with a move in recent days, though it will take a sizeable fee to lure him away from Spain.
