The Ligue 1 giants have won Europe's most-prestigious trophy for the first time with a 5-0 victory at the Allianz Arena

For 14 years, Paris Saint-Germain have huffed and puffed with the aim of winning the Champions League in mind.

When they were purchased by the Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, in June 2011, putting them at the summit of world and European football was their goal. Having been inspired by what was happening at Manchester City, with their own rich owners, they wanted to replicate that.

Yet that wait is now over, with PSG crowned champions of Europe for the first time following an emphatic, blistering, brilliant 5-0 victory over Inter Milan on Saturday night.

This wasn't a victory achieved with Galacticos. There is no Lionel Messi, Neymar, Kylian Mbappe, Edinson Cavani or Zlatan Ibrahimovic to don their famous blue colours these days.

Instead, this is a win that will make them.

Everybody thought Inter would represent a tough test. The way they overcame Barcelona in the semi-finals of the tournament was subline and many believed fans would be treated to another classic at the Allianz Arena.

Yet Inter never turned up. For the first time under Simone Inzaghi, there are questions for the Italian to answer.

Selecting Federico Dimarco was, in the end, their downfall. The 27-year-old had been torn apart by Lamine Yamal last time out but was given the chance to silence his critics in Germany.

After just 12 minutes, however, it was clear that that decision wouldn't pay off.

PSG took a deserved lead through Achraf Hakimi, with the Morocco international converting from close range after being played through by Desire Doue.

Yann Sommer, so good against Barcelona, could do nothing about it.

It is arguably the biggest goal of Hakimi's career but the right-back showed class by declining to celebrate.

That was because he'd spent a year with Inter earlier in his career. How they, and Inzaghi, will be wishing he'd stayed.

Then it became the Doue show. He is, potentially, the only player who will jostle with Yamal for Ballon d'Or glory in the future.

He got a bit of fortune with his first goal, with the 19-year-old's shot deflected as it sailed past Sommer and into the net.

There was nothing lucky about his second in the 63rd minute, however.

LATEST SPORTS NEWS:

The Frenchman struck brilliantly into the bottom corner to spark wild celebrations among the PSG fans in attendance.

While they jumped for joy by performing a 'Poznan' celebration, their Inter counterparts looked to the heavens in despair.

By the time Khvicha Kvaratskhelia added a fourth, and Senny Mayulu a fifth, many had started to vacate the ground. They will sleep badly tonight.

With the job done, PSG closed out the match. Champions League glory, for the first time, is theirs.

Yet what's really terrifying is they could dominate for many years to come.

This is a PSG team that's energetic, youthful and with the desire to keep the biggest trophes coming.

The onus is now on the rest of European football to catch up. Right now, they're simply too good.
