There will only be one Premier League match on Boxing Day this year

Sky Sports has unveiled its festive football schedule, featuring thirty-one Premier League matches broadcast between late December and early January.

In an unprecedented move, only one fixture will take place on Boxing Day this year.

Manchester United will welcome Newcastle to Old Trafford at 8pm on 26 December, marking a significant departure from the traditional packed Boxing Day programme.

The broadcaster's extensive coverage continues throughout the holiday period.

This unusual scheduling arrangement stems from the expansion of European club competitions, which has created significant challenges for domestic fixture planning.

The reduced number of available weekends has forced organisers to adopt this streamlined approach.

The Premier League has addressed this scheduling anomaly directly.

"There are now several challenges to Premier League fixture scheduling rooted in the expansion of European club competitions - which led to a revision of our domestic calendar ahead of last season, including changes to the FA Cup," the organisation stated.

Officials explained that these modifications have reduced the Premier League to a thirty-three weekend competition, despite maintaining its 380-match format since 1995. The calendar constraints have necessitated difficult decisions.

However, the League provided reassurance for traditionalists: "The League can give an assurance that next season there will be more Premier League matches on Boxing Day - as the date falls on a Saturday."

Following the solitary Boxing Day encounter, Sky's coverage intensifies significantly. Six matches will be broadcast on 30 December, including Arsenal's clash with Aston Villa at the Emirates.

The New Year begins with four televised fixtures on 1 January, featuring Manchester United against Wolves and Crystal Palace hosting Fulham.

Liverpool face Leeds whilst Brentford welcome Tottenham in a match that sees Thomas Frank back in the dugout after his absence.

No matches are scheduled for New Year's Eve, allowing supporters to celebrate without missing any action.

The broadcaster's comprehensive coverage ensures fans won't miss crucial festive fixtures despite the condensed schedule.

The weekend of 3-4 January features seven televised encounters, with Aston Villa meeting Nottingham Forest in the early Saturday slot. Manchester City's clash with Chelsea headlines Sunday's offerings at 5.30pm.

Sky's most comprehensive coverage arrives during the midweek fixtures on 7-8 January, when all ten Premier League matches will be broadcast.

The standout encounter sees Arsenal host Liverpool on Thursday 8 January at 8pm, a fixture that could prove pivotal in determining the destination of this season's title.
