Gary Neville has history with the Premier League club ahead of the final day of the Premier League season

Nottingham Forest have banned Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville from The City Ground for their season-defining match against Chelsea on Sunday.

The Champions League-chasing club has formally requested that the broadcaster change its commentary team for the crucial fixture.

Forest believe Neville's presence would receive a hostile welcome from fans following what they perceive as aggressive messaging aimed at diminishing the club's progress this season.

The ban stems from critical comments made by Neville on social media about the club, its board and management.

The Premier League is aware of the situation but will not intervene, as it is within the rights of member clubs to decide who enters their property.

This comes at a critical time as both teams are battling for a place in European football's elite competition.

Forest's move follows what they believe is a pattern of criticism from the former Manchester United defender, with the club having made their feelings clear to Sky after the broadcaster had announced Neville's role in the Sunday showdown several days ago.

Tensions between Neville and Forest escalated when he strongly criticised owner Evangelos Marinakis for walking onto the pitch and exchanging words with manager Nuno Espirito Santo following a 2-2 draw with Leicester.

"Scandalous from that Forest owner," Neville posted on X.

"Nuno should go and negotiate his exit tonight with him! The Forest fans, players and manager do not deserve that."

Forest responded with a statement referencing "fake news online" and warning against "baseless and ill-informed outrage for the purposes of personal social media traction".

The conflict between Forest and Neville has a history. Last year, Sky Sports issued an apology to the club over language used by Neville following their match at Everton.

After Forest posted a statement questioning VAR appointments, Neville likened the club's actions to those of a "mafia gang".

Marinakis confirmed to the Daily Mail that his lawyers had "been in contact with Sky regarding Neville and this is not over yet".

Sky subsequently apologised for any offence caused and stated that Neville had agreed not to use similar terms in future coverage.

Sky Sports has described Forest's action as "unprecedented and unwelcome" and has revised their production plans.

The broadcaster will now present from their west London headquarters rather than the stadium.

According to the Daily Mail, Neville himself chose not to be part of the coverage, with Sky's full backing.

Despite the changes to the presentation team, Sky will still have a commentary team at the ground for the match.
